Hannah Freeze
Hannah Freeze, daughter of Laird and Merri Jo Freeze of Salisbury, presented a solo senior piano recital on June 7 at the First Baptist Church of China Grove.
Hannah is the student of Marsha Carter, and has studied piano for 11 years. Hannah’s program included pieces by Chopin, Debussy, Haydn, Field, Grieg, Barber, Gershwin, Schumann, Gillock and Kolling.
Hannah has participated in the National Guild of Piano Players and the Music Teachers’ Association on both the district and state level. She plans to continue to study piano with Carter and major in music education at the college level.
Following the recital, a reception was held in the Family Life Center for friends and family.
Piano recitals
The piano students of Marsha Carter recently performed in spring recitals at the First Baptist Church in China Grove.
The following students played and were recognized for their participation in the National Guild of Pianists: Maggie and Morgan Utley, Kelsey and Amanda Borras, Molly and Brittney Burgess, Claudia Utley, Preston Tadlock, Olivia Houghton, Paul, J.D. and Iris Faggart, Samantha and Elizabeth Cable, Mary Overcash, Kim Fesperman, Mackenzie Dabbs, Nate Cobb, Rebecca Rousey, Jeremiah and Matthew McNeil, BaileyRodgers, Jacob Cheeseman, Andrew Poe, Morgan Bowman, Caitlin and McKamie Harrison, Catherine Ardoin, Cathryn and Rebekah Lippard and David Freeze. Seniors Erin Dabbs, Hannah Koontz and Hannah Freeze were presented special trophies. All students received a pin representing the number of pieces they played in the Guild and a certificate of participation. Those students who chose to prepare an additional music booklet received a composer statuette.
Dancer featured
Center Stage Dance Company dancer Dillon Stevens, son of Mark and Angie Stevens of China Grove, will be a featured performer in the opening number of the Showstopper National Dance Competition, July 4, in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Stevens received the top honor being first overall, of all junior soloists ages 11 and under at the regional competition held at Cabarrus Events Arena in April. Seventy dancers competed for the top honor in all genres of dance.
Dancers from the United States, Canada, as well as Guam, perform in the opening number each year in Myrtle Beach. Stevens received the first overall title for his award winning tap solo to “Paris.” He received the highest award, a double platinum for his performance.
During the competition season, Stevens placed second overall at Encore Dance Competition for the Stars Regional Competition. He is currently second overall in the nation for his 2008 solo. He is the current national recipient for the Outstanding Tapper Award for Encore DCS, receiving full scholarship for his 2009 entries at regional and national competitions.
At Hall Of Fame National Talent Competition, he placed first overall again with his tap solo. For this honor he received a cash prize of $125.
The event at Myrtle Beach will take place June 30-July 4. On July 4 the taping of the TV show will take place with a live taping at 8:45 a.m. The show will be a live broadcast on the web at www.showstopperonline.com.
Stevens’ solo teacher at Center Stage Dance Company is Sydney Overcash. His co-choreographer for his number is renowned tapper, Jason Janas of Austin, Texas. Jason performs in the internationally acclaimed tap company, Tapestry.
Carver High School
The last class of George Washington Carver High School celebrated its 60th birthday with a reunion celebration sponsored by classmate Dr. Ruby Anthony White, with a cookout on June 12, and dinner on June 13 at the Cabarrus Shrine Club in Kannapolis.
The class previously celebrated a 50th birthday, but for some, this was their first reunion since graduation.”
The celebration was highlighted with remarks from former principle Milton Taylor, and former teachers Betty J. Woods, Earl J. Willie, Ruth M. Curry and Joan J. Bryant.
Some parents of the 1967 graduates attended the celebration, including Corrine L. Cannon, Lena A. Connor and Lurie S. Clowney.
Everyone in attendance enjoyed an evening of dinner and dance.
Many thanks were given to Dr. Anthony-White for bringing the group together.
She encouraged the group to get together every five years and work on the Carver Legacy Committee Project.
She has an internal medicine practice in Ennis, Texas. Her family lives in Kannapolis.
J.C. Price Post 107
The 2010 officers of J.C. Price Post 107 are:

Post members Mae Carroll, Roy Leazer, John Knox, Daniel Haddock and Homer Robertson attended the 91st Annual Convention June 11-14 at the Northern Hilton in Raleigh.
The post won the following awards for metritorious service:
The W. Coburn Alexander-Children and Youth Award, the William T. Joyner Rehabilitation Post Award and the W.K. Rhodes Jr. Community Service Award.
The District Commander’s New Post Achievement Award was presented to Homer Robertson, 19th District Commander in recognition of his efforts for chartering a new American Legion Post.
Awards were presented by the American Legion Department of North Carolina.
Miller reunion
Descendants of Ernest E. and Agatha Eller Miller held their 42nd family reunion at Dan Nicholas Park on Saturday, June 20, 2009.
The reunion was catered by College Barbecue for 50 family members and seven guests.
President of the reunion committee and New Bern native, Jody Walker, recognized the following family members with gifts:
Oldest member present: Ernest Everett Miller, 88 years old, from Cary.
Youngest member present: Joshua David StarnesJr., 9 months old, from Albemarle; Traveled Farthest: Jimmy and Dottie Miller, 300 miles, from Locust Grove, Va; family with most members present: George and Rena Miller Morris with 13 members.
New members added to the Miller family since last year’s reunion were:
Carolyn Propst Miller, wife of Ted Miller. They were married on Jan. 31, 2009. Ted Miller is the son of Coy and Pauline Miller of Salisbury.
Jordan Everett Boyle, son of Jimmy and Megan Miller Boyle, born Aug. 24, 2008, in Spartanburg, S.C.
Joshua David Starnes Jr, son of Joshua and Heather Morris Starnes Sr., born August 25, 2008, in Albemarle.
Delaney Grace Coughlin, daughter of Jason and Taryn Miller Coughlin, born Oct. 16, 2008, in Franklin, Tenn.
Audrey Harrison Leazer, daughter of Chris and Emily Leazer, born Oct. 22, 2008, in Charlotte.
