Area sports briefs: Steedley an all-star

Fort Myers left-handed reliever Spencer Steedley (East Rowan) has been named to the Southern Division squad for the Florida State League All-Star Game.
The game will be played in Fort Myers on June 20.
Steedley, who turned 24 on May 31, is 3-0 with an ERA of 0.74 and 25 strikeouts in 241/3 innings. He hasn’t allowed a homer this season while facing 98 batters.
Steedley made the 2008 Midwest League All-Star Game before being promoted to Fort Myers last summer. He was a 25th-round pick out of Charlotte in 2007.
n New York Mets prospect Bradley Holt (Albemarle) has been promoted from Advanced-A St. Lucie to the Mets’ Double-A team in Binghamton. The hard-throwing right-hander was 4-1 with 50 strikeouts in 411/3 innings in eight starts for St. Lucie.
n Zach Ward (A.L. Brown) took a loss for New Britain on Thursday in the Double-A Eastern League. Ward (2-2, 7.17 ERA) allowed two runs in 11/3 innings in an 8-4 loss against Connecticut.
n NPC baseball
Lefty Nick Lomascolo struck out 10 and pitched a five-hitter as Lake Norman beat Eastern Wayne 9-2 in Friday’s opener in the best-of-three 3A championship series. Lomascolo, a Catawba signee, twice hit 91 mph on the Five County Stadium radar gun.
Nick Keith and Kevin Gradert had two hits apiece for the Wildcats (27-2).n State Games
West Rowan left-handed pitcher Zack Simpson and outfielder Jon Crucitti will play in the upcoming State Games along with East Rowan shortstop/pitcher Preston Troutman, South Rowan shortstop Maverick Miles and Northwest Cabarrus pitcher/ first baseman Taylor West.
State Games dates are June 17-21. Games are played at UNC Charlotte and Hopewell High.
Region 6 plays at 7 p.m. at UNC Charlotte on Thursday, June 18. West Rowan’s David Wright is an assistant coach on the Region 6 team.
n West Rowan shortstop Philip Miclat will play for the West team in the Senior State Games. He’ll play at UNC Charlotte on June 17 at 7 p.m. Lake Norman pitcher Nick Lomascolo will be a teammate.
n South football
Head coach Jason Rollins announced two South Rowan graduates will continue their football and academic careers at the Division III level.
Wide receiver Anthony Bowles is headed to Danville, Va., to play for the Averett Cougars. Bowles was a two-year starter for the Raiders.
Jordan West, an offensive lineman, is headed to Guilford and will make a transition to tight end.
n South football summer workouts will begin on Monday, June 15, and go from 7-10 a.m.
All young men will need cleats and tennis shoes. All players are encouraged to attend. Workouts will run Monday-Thursday each week.

n Intimidators washed
The Kannapolis Intimidators were rained out Friday. They’ll play doubleheaders against West Virginia tonight and Sunday. First pitch tonight is at 6:05. Sunday’s twin bill begins at 3 p.m.n Wood bat leagues
South Carolina standout Whit Merrifield (Davie) will play for the Chatham Anglers of the Cape Cod Baseball League this summer. The Anglers open June 12.
The sophomore center fielder made the All-SEC Defensive team this season, making no errors in 30 league games.
Merrifield batted .340 with 11 homers and 49 RBIs. He stole 15 bases and scored 67 runs.
n In the Southern Collegiate Baseball League, Jerod Faggart (NW Cabarrus, Appalachian State) hit a three-run homer on opening night and had four hits and five RBIs in his first two games with the Lake Norman Copperheads.
Catawba outfielder Jake Faggart (NWC), Davidson pitcher Ryan Overcash (NWC) and Charlotte pitcher Aubrey Meadows (Mooresville) also are on the Lake Norman roster.
n Southeast soccer
Southeast’s boys soccer team completed a 13-0 season with a 6-1 victory against North Rowan in the Rowan Middle School Conference tournament final.
Emilson Turcios had a hat trick for the Patriots. Ivan Hernandez scored two goals. Jose Hernandez added one.
Southeast got excellent defensive play from goalkeeper Brian Vanegas, Antonio Perez, Enrique Garcia and the entire midfield.
n Carson cross country

Carson’s summer running program begins the week of June 22.
n Wonders camp
The Kannapolis Wonder Youth Football Camp will be held June 15-17 from 8:30 until noon each day.
