Area sports briefs: Intimidators edge Delmarva

The Kannapolis Intimidators beat Delmarva 4-3 on Saturday.
Drew Garcia scored the winning run on a passed ball in the eighth inning.
Stephen Sauer pitched seven strong innings for the Intimidators. Drew O’Neil was the winning pitcher.
The game was played in front of 4,482 fans, largest crowd of the season.
n Junior Legion
Rowan beat Cornelius 6-3 in its league opener at Newman Park on Saturday.
Rowan had a four-run first inning. Justin Morris and Luke Thomas doubled. Andy Austin and Jamey Blalock had RBI singles, and Blalock scored on a passed ball.
Blalock tripled home a run in the fifth.
Will Johnson was the winning pitcher, working into the sixth. Matt Miller closed it out.
Rowan plays at Western Forsyth today and will play Mocksville at home Tuesday.
n Statesville scored three runs in the first inning and beat the Salisbury Cavornets 3-0 on Saturday.
Statesville used a walk, two infield hits and a bloop single to score those three runs.
Both teams played good defense. Patrick Snider took the loss on the mound for the Cavornets. He allowed four hits in 61/3 innings.
“Patrick really pitched well and deserved a better fate, but we just couldn’t get the big hit,” Salisbury coach Scott Maddox said. “We had the bases loaded twice.”
Salisbury (2-2, 1-2) plays Rowan at Newman Park Thursday at 7 p.m.
n Prep baseball
Lake Norman advanced to the 3A state championship series with a 7-6 win against visiting Tuscola on Saturday afternoon.
Tuscola scored three times in the top half of the seventh inning to tie the game, and Nick Lomascolo’s two-out single over third base brought Donnie Burt home with the winning run.
The Wildcats, who swept the best-of-three Western finals, will face Eastern Wayne in Game 1 on Friday.
Burt singled to begin the bottom of the seventh. He moved to second on Nick Keith’s bunt and went to third on Tyler Lewis’ flyout. Kevin Gradert was walked intentionally, and Lomascolo responded with a hit down the left-field line.
Burt, Lomascolo and Eric Manser had RBIs and multiple hits. Joe Gunning, who had hit only a few times all year, delivered an RBI double.
Ross Whitley, who pitched the final 11/3 innings, picked up the win. Taylor Thurber started and allowed one run in four innings. Lomascolo pitched 12/3 innings.
n Prep soccer
MVP Stephanie Rose had two goals and two assists to lead Jacksonville White Oak to a 5-0 victory against Kings Mountain in the 3A championship match on Saturday.
n Lindsay Redfearn scored with 27 second left in overtime as Swansboro edged Forbush 2-1 in the 2A championship match on Saturday.
n Anna Trakas scored the only goal to lead Polk County to a 1-0 victory against Raleigh Charter in the 1A championship match.
n Raleigh Leesville Road beat Charlotte Ardrey Kell 1-0 on penalty kicks in the 4A championship game on Saturday.
n Charlotte Swarm
The Charlotte Home Education Swarm basketball organization will give homeschooled students in the Greater Charlotte area another option for playing competitive basketball.
The Swarm plans a 20-game schedule this fall against prep, private and charter schools as well as conference opponents in the North Carolinians for Home Education Athletic Conference.
The program is for boys ages 11-18. There’s no girls program.
