Golf Roundup: Sabbatini holds on
The golf roundup …
IRVING, Texas ó Rory Sabbatini has won the Byron Nelson Championship, finishing with a two-stroke victory over late-charging Brian Davis.
Sabbatini shot a 6-under 64 Sunday to finish with a tournament record at 19-under 261 for his fifth PGA Tour victory.
Davis, whose closing 64 gave him his third career runner-up finish, made a 26-foot eagle putt at the 546-yard No. 16 to get to 17 under. Sabbatini, coming off a birdie, was standing on the 16th tee box at the time, and could only shake his head when his lead suddenly went from three to one.
But Sabbatini responded with a tap-in birdie on the same hole, after his 21-foot eagle try slid just past and sent him crouching in disbelief when it didn’t go in the hole.
It is the first win for Sabbatini since 2007 at Colonial.
BEACHWOOD, Ohio ó Michael Allen, winless in 271 PGA Tour events, shot a 3-under 67 Saturday for a one-shot lead over Jeff Sluman and Tom Kite through three rounds of the Senior PGA Championship.
Allen, who turned 50 in January, is making his senior debut and finds himself atop the leaderboard in the tour’s first major championship of the year. He stands at 3-under 207 through 54 holes.
Sluman had the lead to himself before bogeying the 16th and 18th holes, completing a 70 that tied him with Kite, who shot a 69.
Larry Mize (71), Gil Morgan (707) and Tim Simpson (68) are another shot back at 209. Joey Sindelar (69), Bruce Fleisher (69) and Jay Don Blake (71) are three shots off the lead.
CORNING, N.Y. ó Yani Tseng of South Korea has won the LPGA Corning Classic by one shot over Soo-Yun Kang and Paula Creamer.
