Area Sports Briefs: Stallions headed to World Series

The Cabarrus-Rowan Homeschool Stallions baseball team is headed to the World Series in Pensacola, Fla., May 18-21.
The Stallions (18-4) won five of six games and finished third in the recent East Regional held in Cary. The top four qualified for nationals.
Daniel Newton, Christian Hicks and Andrew Schipani made the all-tournament team.
The only loss for the local homeschoolers was to regional runner-up Augusta, Ga. in a first-round game.
Cabarrus-Rowan lost to Augusta 6-1 but bounced back to beat Hendersonville, Tenn. 16-5. Other wins came against Waukesha, Wisc. (20-5), Northern Virginia (13-1), Woodstock Atlanta (11-3) and Richmond, Va. (7-1).
Regional champ Gwinnett, Ga., and Richmond will join Cabarrus-Rowan and Augusta in the World Series.
– Minor leagues
The Kannapolis Intimidators ended a three-game losing streak with a 4-2 victory at Hickory on Sunday.
Kannapolis scored the deciding runs in the ninth without a hit. The Intimidators (11-7) took advantage of a hit batsman, two wild pitches and two errors.
Greg Infante pitched seven innings and allowed two runs.
* While Catawba was winning the SAC tournament in dramatic fashion, former Indian David Thomas also had a nice day. The Kane County center fielder scored five runs in a Midwest League doubleheader sweep against Beloit. Thomas hit a three-run homer in the opener.
* Round Rock’s Jeremy Johnson (Mooresville) is closing in on his first chance at the show.
He had another dominant relief appearance for Houston’s Triple A club Sunday in a 6-2 victory against Memphis. Johnson allowed two hits and an unearned run in four innings. He earned a save and lowered his ERA to 1.98.
* New Britain’s Zach Ward (A.L. Brown) pitched a scoreless inning Friday to lower his ERA to 1.86.
– American Legion
Kannapolis American Legion tryouts are May 9 at noon and May 10 at 2 p.m. at A.L. Brown’s field.
To be eligible, players must be born on or after Jan. 1, 1990, and parents’ domicile address must be closer to A.L. Brown High than South Rowan High, Central Cabarrus High and Mooresville High. For information, contact Roger Bigham at 704-467-3606.
* South Rowan American Legion baseball sign-ups will be held Sunday, May 3, at 2 p.m. at the South Rowan High field. Players born in 1990 or later are eligible to play this summer.
All players who attend South Rowan and any player who attends Carson, West Rowan or East Rowan whose parents’ domicile is closer to South Rowan High than to Salisbury High, Mooresville High, or Davie High are eligible to play for South Rowan.

– SAC softball
Carson-Newman junior Stephanie Templeton pitched a four-hit shutout as the Eagles beat Wingate 2-0 for the SAC tournament championship on Sunday.
– Prep softball
North Rowan lost a CCC doubleheader to Providence Grove 7-6 and 5-3.
In the first game, Kristin Holshouser, Samantha Jacobs and Marquita Thomas had hits for the Cavaliers, while Dalia Gomez played well defensively.
In the second game, Jacobs, Holshouser, Gomez, Emily Gobble and Symphony Roberts had hits for the Cavaliers (2-12, 2-10).
– McCanless golf
The McCanless Ladies Golf Association held a two-day Spring Handicap Tournament Saturday and Sunday. Dolly Canup won low net. Trudy Csanyi was second, with Eileen Full third. Sharon Miller won low gross.
– College lacrosse
Catawba lost to eighth-ranked Limestone 24-5 to close the season on Saturday.
– College track
Appalachian State’s Mark Sturgis (North Rowan) won the triple jump in the SoCon Outdoor Championships with an effort of 50 feet, 1 1/4 inches.
– College baseball
Belmont’s Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) his his ninth homer of the season in a 26-2 loss to Kennesaw State on Friday.
