Area sports: Catawba baseball sweeps

Catawba finally was able to play a baseball doubleheader at Newberry Monday and picked up a big sweep.
The Indians (18-9, 9-3) stand third in the SAC behind ninth-ranked Tusculum (12-0 SAC) and 21st-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne (7-1 SAC).
Senior right-hander Blake Ketner dominated the opener, tossing a three-hitter in a 5-0 win.
Ketner is 6-1.
Chris Ahearn and Brett Hatley had two hits each. Josh Hohn and Ryan Query scored two runs apiece.
n The second game was scheduled for seven innings but went 12. Catawba won 5-4, scoring in the 12th when Craige Lyerly hit an opposite-field triple on an 0-2 offering and dashed home on a wild pitch.
Ahearn, Zeb Link and Jake Faggart had two hits apiece. Catawba got great work out of the bullpen from Nathan Furr, who tossed five shutout innings, and Trevor Mullins, who blanked Newberry the last two frames to earn the win. He’s 3-2.
* Twenty-sixth ranked Pfeiffer’s Jonathan McDaniel (Davie) lost a 2-0 game to Erskine over the weekend despite allowing one run and four hits in six innings.
* Rudy Brown (South Rowan) took the loss in relief as UNC Pembroke fell 10-6 to Armstrong Atlantic Monday. Brown is 3-2.
– Prep baseball
Today’s Carson-Statesville varsity game has had a change of time and venue. Because of wet conditions at Statesville’s field, the game will be played at Carson at 7 p.m., following the jayvee game.
* Mooresville demolished South Park (Pa.) 20-0 in five frames. Keith Little was the winning pitcher.
– Prep softball
North Iredell beat frontrunner Northwest Cabarrus 5-3 in a makeup softball game Monday.
Northwest’s loss left four NPC teams, including South Rowan and East Rowan, with one loss each in the conference. Northwest plays host to East Rowan in today’s biggest game.
– Prep soccer
Brittany Gibbons had two goals and four assists as West Rowan beat South Rowan 9-0 in NPC play on Monday. West (5-3) recorded its fourth shutout.
Nicole Lucente had two goals, while Allison Baucom, Sadie Chuor, Patricia Ascencion, Jessica Gibbons and Courtney Christie had one each.
Jennifer Rivera, Allison Parker, Chuor and Jessica Gibbons had assists.
West plays Mooresville Wednesday afternoon at Catawba.
– Prep tennis
South Rowan (3-2, 2-1) topped West Iredell 8-1 Monday in NPC play.
South has beaten East Rowan (5-3) and Central Cabarrus (5-4) and lost to Salisbury (9-0) and Northwest Cabarrus (7-1), with a couple of matches shortened by darkness.
– Prep golf
In Monday’s CCC match at Sapona, Salisbury shot 153 to top Ledford and West Davidson by four strokes.
Roy Dixon paced the Hornets with a 37. Clark Alcorn and Alex Nianouris shot 38s. Troy Beaver shot 40.
North Rowan’s Miller Sokolowski had a stellar round with a 36. North finished at 171 to tie for fifth. Jesse Pinkston shot 44, Billy Fordyce carded a 45, and Kyle Collins had a 46.
West Davidson’s Justin Clement was medalist with a 35.
– GARS outing
Sixty-five GARS members played at Warrior Monday.
Clifford Full led ‘A’ Flight players with a net of 64.41. Gwyn Huie led the ‘B’ Flight with a net of 66.34.
Bill Bradley was low ‘C’ player with a net of 65.81. Low ‘D’ player was Harold Caudill with a net of 65.98.
– Woodleaf Civitan golf
The annual Woodleaf Civitan golf tournament is scheduled for Saturday, April 25, at Foxwood, with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Registration starts at 11:30 a.m. Cost is $40 person and $160 per team.

– Catawba softball
Catawba and Brevard split a SAC doubleheader Monday.
The Indians (16-12, 3-1) won 11-2 before losing 4-2.
In the opener, Catawba had 17 hits, including three each by Carly Sabat, Brittany Thornburg and Jessie Whitesides. Chelsea Wallace pitched a three-hitter.
* In the second game, Catawba was held hitless until the seventh.
– Overseas basketball
Terris Sifford (West Rowan) had 27 points and 23 rebounds to lead his team in Italy to a weekend win.
– Intimidators BBQ Bash
The Kannapolis Intimidators are hosting their 2nd Annual Baseball and BBQ Bash on Saturday, April 11, at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium.
