South teachers attend workshop
Amy Brooks, a teacher at South Rowan High School, attended the Holocaust workshop March 4 with two other instructors at South, Melissa Bass and Audra Fincher.
“I got a lot of insight into how to approach the Holocaust,” Brooks said. “All three of us were pleased with the workshop.”
Brooks said the trio talked about the fact that students have a hard time grasping what the Jews went through.
She said she was glad to hear the U.S. portrayed in such a positive light by Gizella Abramson, the day’s keynote speaker.
Brooks’ students read the book “Night,” a compelling account of the Holocaust.
For many of the students, Brooks said it was the first time they are confronted with man’s inhumanity to man. That’s why it’s also important to talk about the many people who fought in the resistance effort.
It’s also important, she said, to help students understand that they should “be careful of not being drawn into anything that can hurt someone else. The Holocaust is a massive scale of everybody not speaking up.”
She added, “You have to be ever vigilant.”
