College football: Sexton close to joining Catawba

Cam Sexton, who started six games at quarterback for North Carolina’s football team last season, is expected to announce Thursday he’s transferring to Catawba.
Sexton played at Scotland County High School, where Catawba has significant ties to the coaching staff. He was 94 of 168 passing for 1,261 yards and nine touchdowns with the Tar Heels in 2008.
The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Sexton is scheduled to graduate from UNC in May with a communications degree, but he still has one season of football eligibility remaining.
Sexton announced in January he would not be returning to UNC, and he has been exploring Division II options.
Catawba employed three quarterbacks ó Howard Williamson, Patrick Dennis and Daniel Griffith ó last season, and all three have eligibility remaining. Catawba also signed Shrine Bowl QB Brett Mooring.
