area sports briefs: Shive lifts Mustangs

It was a bunt situation, but East Rowan’s Corbin Shive hit the ball over the left-center field fence to give the Mustangs a 3-1, eight-inning victory over West Forsyth in their opening baseball game on Saturday at Staton Field.
With the score tied 1-1, East’s Noah Holmes walked to open the eighth. Shive failed to get down his first bunt attempt, then with West Forsyth infielders charging to field a bunt, he hit a ball 380 feet.
Cody Laws pitched four shutout innings of relief for East and earned the win. Kent Basinger started on the mound and allowed three hits and one run. West Forsyth scored in the first inning.
East was held to four hits, including doubles by David Ijames and Casey Little.
East threw out a runner at the plate (Little-to third baseman Holmes-to catcher Austin Shull) and Ijames made a diving catch on the right-field line to take away a double.

n West Rowan lost to Eastern Wayne 3-0 on Saturday in the Cary Invitational.
West was limited to two hits รณ Philip Miclat’s triple and Hernan Bautista’s double.
Zack Simpson pitched four innings, struck out five and allowed two runs for the Falcons (0-2). D.J. Webb pitched two innings and allowed one run.
n Davie County put seven players on the field Saturday that had no varsity experience. It didn’t seem to matter as the War Eagles won their opener over Southwestern Randolph 9-8.
Davie rallied from a 7-2 deficit by banging out 18 hits, including three apiece by Tyler Seaford and Evan Criscoe. Jake Vernon had two hits, a homer and three RBIs, and Jess Cartner added two hits, a homer and two RBIs. Joe Watson also homered.
Carson Herndon and Ryan Foster both went 2-for-4.
“We swung it pretty dadgum good,” coach Mike Herndon said.
Josh Berryhill relieved starter Brad Gaither and struck out seven in 42/3 innings to earn the victory. Cartner got the save.
Davie plays host to North Rowan on Monday at 7 pm. at Rich Park.
n A.L. Brown (1-2, 1-1) beat Sun Valley 6-5 for an SPC victory on Saturday. Lefty Dylan May pitched five strong innings for the win.
John Tuttle homered for the Wonders. Spencer Falls tripled. Wesley Honeycutt and Zach Jones had two hits apiece.
– Lake Norman (1-1) fell to South Meck 6-5. Nick Lomascolo struck out nine in four innings. Daniel Burt led the Wildcats with a three-run homer and a runs-scoring triple.
n West Davidson (2-0) rallied for three runs in the seventh to beat South Davidson 4-3.
Zach Myers pitched five innings of one-hit ball for the Green Dragons. Josh Andrews was the winner in relief. Alex Grubb and Jon Jarvis had two hits each.
n Catawba baseball
Catawba split its SAC doubleheader with Lincoln Memorial on Saturday.
Craige Lyerly (East Rowan) had five hits in the twin bill for the Indians. The Railsplitters won the opener 6-4, but Kevin McMillan (North Rowan) hit a sixth-inning grand slam that lifted the Indians to a 13-12 victory in the nightcap.
Jake Faggart (NW Cabarrus) and Lyerly and Ryan Query (A.L. Brown) hit a two-run homer.
Catawba (9-5, 4-1) got great relief pitching from Nathan Furr to make the lead provided by stand up.
Cody Pack’s two-run homer keyed Lincoln Memorial (13-10, 3-6) to victory in the opener. Catawba stranded 14 baserunners.
n College baseball
N.C. State’s Wade Moore (West Rowan) hit a tape-measure home run as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning of the Wolfpack’s 7-6 loss against Miami on Friday. The homer traveled into the third level of the parking deck beyond the right-center field wall at Miami’s field.
In the top of the 12th, Moore beat out a bunt to score a go-ahead run, but Miami won the game with a walkoff two-run homer in the bottom of the 12th.
n Kyle Seager (NW Cabarrus) has hit .378 with nine RBIs in UNC’s first 10 games.
n Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) went 3-for-5 in Belmont’s 12-7 victory against USC Upstate on Friday.
n Whit Merrifield (Davie) had two hits for South Carolina in Friday’s 15-8 victory against Long Beach State.
n Trey Holmes (East Rowan) has stepped into the No. 3 spot in the batting order for a loaded Pitt Community College squad and is 10-for-18 in undefeated Pitt’s first five games.
n Zach Glass (Salisbury) had a two-run single for Lenoir-Rhyne in an 8-4 loss to Bloomsburg on Saturday.
n Pfeiffer’s Jonathan McDaniel (Davie) pitched a complete game Saturday in a 6-1 win against Anderson.
n Pro baseball
Bobby Parnell (East Rowan) pitched a scoreless inning for the New York Mets in Thursday’s 3-2 win over the Italian National team.
n SAC tournament
Nikki Van Dine poured in a career-high 26 points to lead top-seeded Tusculum’s women to an 85-70 win against No. 4 seed Carson-Newman.
Van Dine established a SAC Tournament record with eight 3-pointers, all in the first half.
n Cameron Sealy scored 18 points on perfect shooting to lead Lenoir-Rhyne’s second-seeded women to a 78-62 victory against No. 3 seed Newberry.
n Kyle Moore scored 26 points as Tusculum beat Newberry 79-61 in a men’s semifinal Saturday night.
n Cougar-Raider golf
The third annual Cougar/Raider golf tournament will be held on Saturday, March 14, at Corbin Hills.
There will be a shotgun start at 1:30 pm. Lunch and registration begin at 11:30.
Proceeds will be divided equally between the Carson and South Rowan athletic programs. In the past two years, $19,400 was raised.

n Racquetball league
Salisbury Parks and Recreation Department’s Civic Center, 315 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, is accepting registration for the Spring Fit and Wellness Racquetball League.
Registration is through Tuesday, March 10.
The Spring Fit and Wellness Racquetball League is a competitive league featuring singles and doubles divisions.
League play starts Monday, March 16. Registration fee is $20 per person.

The West Rowan Booster Club will meet March 9 at 6:30 p.m. in the school library.
n College softball
Catawba lost twice in Georgia Saturday, losing 8-4 to Columbus State and falling 12-2 to ninth-ranked North Georgia.
Catawba (7-7) got a two-run single from Mack White (Carson) in the loss to Columbus State. Callie Gordy and Kathryn Geouge had two hits each.
White had a run-scoring single for the Indians against North Georgia, and Ryann Baker (East Rowan) hit a solo homer.
n Prep softball
Davie County’s softball team used a four-run fourth inning to beat Lake Norman 5-2 on Friday.
Morgan Wyatt homered and knocked in two runs. Jordan Schultz doubled and drove in a run.
n College lacrosse
David Hodgins scored five goals to lead eighth-ranked Mars Hill to a 17-6 victory over Catawba in Deep South Conference men’s lacrosse on Saturday.
Braden Artem had three goals for Catawba (0-3). Marty Tuohy scored twice.
