A career game by sophomore point guard Dominick Reid lifted Catawba to a 90-80 victory against visiting Brevard on Saturday afternoon.
Reid, a product of the Cannon School scored 30 points. He shot 8-for-11 on 3-pointers, pulled down 13 rebounds and added seven assists.
Catawba’s school record is nine 3-pointers. Mark Flynn hit nine against Elon in 1992. Art Wade made nine against Wingate in 1998.
The game was in doubt with the Indians leading 53-49 with 14 minutes to play, but Reid scored 14 of Catawba’s points during a 19-11 spurt that pushed the lead to double digits.
Catawba then went 5-for-6 from the foul line to hold off a late charge by the Tornados.
Catawba hit 14 3-pointers against Brevard after failing to make a single 3 on Wednesday. The 3-less night broke Catawba’s nine-year streak of making at least one shot from the bonus line.
Rob Fields scored 14 points for Catawba.
The Indians (18-9, 10-6) finished in a three-way tie for second with Tusculum and Newberry and earned a tournament home game on Wednesday night.
They’ll be seeded fourth and will play host to No. 5 seed Lincoln Memorial at 7 p.m.
Cody Siniard led Brevard (12-15, 3-13) with 19 points. The Tornados finished ninth and didn’t qualify for the SAC tournament.

n Catawba women win
Catawba’s women’s basketball team shook off a sluggish start and beat Brevard 67-57 to close the regular season on Saturday afternoon.
It was the last home game for Catawba seniors Brittany Higgins, Cameron Clark and Sara Crane.
Higgins led the Indians with 16 points and added nine rebounds. Nisha Long had 13 points and nine boards. Clark (North Stanly) had nine points, six rebounds, four assists and seven steals.
Catawba (16-11, 8-8) made just one of its first 15 shots to dig a 10-4 hole and trailed 34-33 at halftime.
Long’s 3-pointer just before the halftime horn gave the Indians momentum and they carried it over. They took charge in the opening minutes of the second half following a three-point play by Higgins.
Catawba was 19-for-21 on free throws in the second half.
Samantha Winn led the Tornados with 23 points.
Catawba finished sixth and will travel to No. 3 Newberry for the first round of the SAC tournament. They’ll play at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
Brevard (6-21, 0-16) finished ninth and didn’t qualify for the tournament.

n College baseball
Catawba third baseman Craige Lyerly (East Rowan) was named SAC Player of the Week and teammate Trevor Mullins was named SAC Pitcher of the Week.
Lyerly batted .625 with three doubles, four steals and five RBIs.
Mullins hurled a two-hit shutout in a 5-0 win against Carson-Newman.
n UNC Pembroke’s Rudy Brown (South Rowan) was the winning pitcher in relief in a 12-5 victory against Post on Friday. Brown (3-0) allowed two hits and fanned nine in 52/3 innings.
n Belmont’s Daniel Wagner (South) hit a three-run homer in a 7-4 win against Toledo on Friday.
n N.C. State’s Wade Moore (West Rowan) was 2-for-5 as the Wolfpack swept a pair against Hofstra.
n Charlotte’s Justin Roland (East) had the key hit, a two-run double, in Charlotte’s 7-1 win against Oakland on Thursday.
n Belmont Abbey’s Patrick Atwell (South) had two doubles, and Caleb Shore (South) was 1-for-1 in a 12-2 romp over Mars Hill on Thursday.
n Nick Daniels (NW Cabarrus) pitched three innings and allowed one run in Appalachian State’s 8-6 loss to Elon on Friday.
n UNC shortstop Ryan Graepel, whose mother grew up in China Grove, hit his first career homer for the Tar Heels in Friday’s 4-3 win against Seton Hall.
n Charlotte’s Rob Lyerly, whose parents are Rowan natives, is off to another great start with the 49ers. He’s batting .364 with two homers.
Charlotte’s weekend series with Canisius was rained out.
n Appalachian State second baseman Wes Hobson, whose father graduated from North Rowan, is batting .313 as the leadoff man for the Mountaineers.
n Postponements
Rain played havoc with Saturday’s SAC baseball slate. Catawba was washed out and hopes to play two games against Tusculum this afternoon at Newman Park if weather cooperates.
Catawba’s lacrosse match set for Sunday and Saturday’s softball games also were erased by the weather. The lacrosse match was rescheduled for April 11.
n College men’s basketball
Michael Gore (South Rowan) contributed six points and four rebounds in 22 minutes of action as Coker beat Lees-McRae 73-64 in the first round of the Conference Carolinas tournament on Saturday.
n College women’s hoops
South Carolina State’s Sophilia Hipps (North Rowan) scored 16 points in a 68-67 loss against Bethune-Cookman on Saturday.
n CIAA tournament
Jerry Hollis scored 19 points to lead J.C. Smith’s men (23-7) to a 70-63 victory against Virginia Union in the championship game of the CIAA basketball tournament in Charlotte on Saturday night.
Gregg Thondike scored 23 points for Virginia Union (21-6).
n J.C. Smith’s women rode 30 points from Charlotte transfer Wendy Stywalt to a 49-36 victory against Bowie State in the title game.
n SAC finales
Mars Hill sophomore guard Brittini Young, who played her freshman season of high school ball at East Rowan, led SAC women in scoring, averaging 16.9 points a game.
n Josh Rudder scored 25 points to lead L-R’s men to an 87-76 victory against Mars Hill on Saturday.
n Jesse McMurray’s 25 points led Carson-Newman to an 80-74 upset of Wingate’s men on Saturday.
n Kurie Washington scored 30 points, and Anna Atkinson broke the SAC record for career steals as Wingate’s women outscored Carson-Newman 99-90 on Saturday.
Atkinson has 355 steals.
n College track
N.C. State’s Lamont Savage (West Rowan) earned All-ACC honors with a third-place finish in the ACC Indoor Championships held at Virginia Tech.
n N.C. State’s Jason Jones (East Rowan) was fifth in the weight throw with a PB of 58 feet, 6 inches.
n Makenzie Mullinax (South Rowan) helped Charlotte win another Atlantic-10 indoor title. She cleared 10-4 for seventh in the pole vault.
n Anderson official
Anderson will become a SAC member on July 1, 2010, and will compete for titles and honors starting with the 2010-11 academic year.
n College golf
Pfeiffer’s Brittany Beltran was named Conference Carolinas Golfer of the Month.
n 7th-grade hoops
Corriher-Lipe’s girls topped North Rowan 22-16 for their first win of the season. Kacie Stamey led the Yellow Jackets (1-7) with nine points. Stacy Robinson added 6.
Stamey is the grand-daughter of the late Landis legend Len “Holy” Cross, who once hit four homers in four innings in a 1948 minor league game, while playing for the Class B Spartanburg Peaches. Cross went 7-for-7 with 12 RBIs that night.
n North Hills hoops
The North Hills Middle girls went 18-3 and 12-0 in league play.
North Hills beat Success Institute 26-18 and Statesville Montessori 34-12 for the tourney title. Abby Lane scored 21 points to win MVP honors.
Natalie Whicker, C.C. Lyerly and Charlotte Kaufmann joined Lane on the PAC-8 all-star team.
