Area briefs: Salisbury boys ranked No. 1

Salisbury’s boys are ranked No. 1 in the NCPreps.com basketball media poll that was released Monday night.
The Hornets, who have won 24 in a row since losing their opener to South Rowan, received 11 of 13 first-place votes cast.
Forest Hills, ranked second, attracted one first-place vote. The other first-place vote went to Smoky Mountain, the former No. 1 which lost twice last week.
Other highly regarded teams in 2A include Shelby, East Lincoln, West Bladen and Reidsville.
* Kinston is No. 1 in the 3A ranks, with Concord second.
Lake Norman is ranked sixth this week. West Rowan is seventh.
* Mount Tabor’s boys are ranked fifth in 4A. Undefeated Hopewell is still No. 1.
* East Davidson’s unbeaten girls remain No. 1 in 2A. Salisbury is ranked third. North Stanly is fifth.
* Concord’s girls are fifth in 3A, while Statesville’s girls are ranked seventh.
* Mount Tabor’s girls are ranked sixth in 4A.
– Men’s basketball
Pfeiffer outscored visiting Barton 126-117 on Monday.
It was a season-high offensive outburst for the Falcons (14-10, 11-6 Conference Carolinas). They had scored 124 against West Virginia State.
Pfeiffer led 71-60 at halftime.
Chris Woods scored 29 points to lead Pfeiffer. He was 11-for-11 at the foul line.
Chris Donald scored 24 points.
Aaron Suggs led the Bulldogs (18-6, 14-3) with 30 points.
* Livingstone built up a 15-point halftime lead and defeated NAIA squad Morris 73-64 in Sumter, S.C., on Monday. A 50-39 edge on the glass helped the Blue Bears overcome 20 turnovers.
– Women’s basketball
Pfeiffer lost to Barton 87-81 on Monday.
Shanee Purnell led the Falcons (6-18, 6-13) with 27 points and 11 rebounds. Nicole Maready (Davie) had 19 points and seven rebounds.
Esty Flores scored 26 points for Barton (18-5, 15-4).
* Meredith’s Brittany Cornelius (East Rowan) had eight assists in a 91-64 loss to Greensboro on Monday.
* South Carolina State’s Sophilia Hipps (North Rowan) scored 10 points in a 73-56 loss against Howard on Monday.
– Lowery in Hall
Davie coach Buddy Lowery has been named to the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. He will be honored May 17 in Chapel Hill.
Lowery has coached 33 years at Davie, and his teams are 623-93. Lowery’s squads have won 32 regular-season or tournament league championships, 15 regional titles and three state championships.
Davie recently qualified 12 wrestlers for the 4A individual championships.
Lowery was a standout in wrestling and football at North Rowan in the late 1960s and played on East Carolina football’s famed “Wild Dog” defensive units in the early 1970s.
– Prep track
North Rowan freshman Teaunna Cuthbertson has qualified to compete in the hurdles in the Nike Indoor National Championships to be held in Boston from March 13-15.
– College track
Livingstone’s Tim Handy (Salisbury) ran on a fourth-place distance medley relay team (11:28.19) and on a sixth-place 4×400 relay team (3:29.97) at the CIAA Indoor Championships.
– College baseball
Wilkes Community College won three of four games over the weekend, splitting with Burlington C.C. on Saturday and sweeping Salem C.C. on Sunday.
Jason Brown (A.L. Brown) doubled, tripled and knocked in four runs in an 8-7 loss against Burlington.
Cy Young (East Rowan) was the winning pitcher in a 12-10 decision against Burlington. Daniel Welch (NW Cabarrus) had two RBIs.
Jason Ridenhour (North Rowan) pitched 52/3 innings and struck out six in a 6-5 victory against Salem. Justin Kidd (West Rowan) got the save. Brown provided more offense with a homer and four RBIs.
In a 9-2 victory against Salem, Welch had three RBIs, Lance Emert (Davie) had two, and Jacob Dobbins (North) went 2-for-3.
– GARS outing
Forty-four GARS members played at McCanless Golf Club on Monday.
Low ‘A’ Flight player was Clifford Full with a net of 67.14.
Low ‘B’ player was Nelson Earnhardt with a net of 63.37.
Low ‘C’ player was Bill Bradley with a net of 64.20.
Low ‘D’ player with a net of 60.42 was Larry Luther.
– Tennis clinics
The spring Catawba junior tennis clinics will begin Sunday and run from 2-3:30 p.m.

Rowan Little League softball is accepting sign-ups at Godley’s Garden Center and online at http://www.rowanlittleleague.com.
Softball cost is $40 for girls ages 6-8. Cost is $60 for ages 9-14.
