Brett Goodwell scored 23 points and Clemente Martin added 21 to lead Newberry to a 79-73 SAC win against Catawba at Goodman Gym on Wednesday.
Rob Fields scored 22 points for Catawba, while Dominick Reid had 14. Cliff Burns (Davie) and Antonio Houston scored 11 apiece, but Houston struggled through a 2-for-14 shooting night.
Kendrick Johnson had 11 points and 10 rebounds for the visitors.
Catawba (14-8, 6-5), which slid into a tie for fifth in the league, shot 31 percent in the opening half.
Trailing 55-51 with 8:38 remaining, Newberry (17-6, 7-5) went on an 8-0 run that turned the game.
Newberry shot 50 percent for the game and 58 percent in the second half.

– Catawba women
Catawba’s women’s basketball team beat Newberry 71-54 on Wednesday behind a career-high 22 points by junior guard Brooke Whitley.
Whitley hit five 3-pointers.
Catawba (13-9, 5-6) took charge of the SAC game from the outset. Cameron Clark scored 14 points, Brittany Higgins had 10 of her 12 points in the first half, and Dana Hicks also had a dozen points for the Indians.
With 15 minutes left, the Indians had a 10-0 run that stretched a six-point lead to 16 and settled the issue.
Anita Bulcher scored 22 points for Newberry (14-9, 7-5).

Sophomore Jamel Carpenter (West Rowan) averages 14.0 points, 3.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.5 steals for Florida Community College.
– College women’s hoops
Guilford’s Tracey Croner (East Rowan) scored 17 points for Guilford in a 62-47 victory over Lynchburg on Wednesday.
– Overseas basketball
Carlos Dixon (South Rowan) scored three 3-pointers and scored 23 points for his team in Argentina on Sunday.
* Donte Minter (West Rowan) had a monster game in Portugal on Saturday, pouring in 33 points on 16-for-22 shooting. Minter had eight rebounds and blocked three shots.
– Catawba baseball
Max Loveland’s two-run homer in the sixth lifted Lenoir-Rhyne to an 8-7 victory against visiting Catawba on Wednesday.
Loveland also got a save for the Bears (5-4). Evan Cook had four hits.
Brett Hatley (West Rowan) had a two-run double for Catawba (2-1), and Josh Hohn belted a run-scoring triple to higlight a six-run sixth inning.
– Catawba swimming
Catawba’s men’s team has been named to the College Swim Coaches Association of America all-academic team for the fall semester.
The swimmers posted a 3.09 team GPA. Catawba was one of seven NCAA D-II teams to earn the honor.
– College softball
Mars Hill’s Lindsey Barrier (East Rowan) went 3-for-8 in a doubleheader split with Montreat on Tuesday.
– Livingstone basketball
Livingstone’s men’s basketball team evened its record at 11-11 with a 93-84 victory at St. Paul’s on Tuesday.
* Livingstone’s women’s team fell to St. Paul’s 69-58.
– Jayvee basketball
West Rowan’s girls lost 27-23 to Northwest Cabarrus. Alison Dutton scored nine points for the Falcons.
West’s boys lost 52-48 to the Trojans. Isaiah Cuthbertson led the Falcons with 22 points, while Maurice Warren had nine and Kajuan Phillips six.
– Sacred Heart hoops
The Sacred Heart jayvee girls won the conference tournament championship, defeating First Assembly of Winston-Salem16-1. Erin Ansbro scored seven points and Kate Sullivan five for the Dolphins.
Sacred Heart advanced to the final by defeating Hickory Christian 15-12. Megan Hedgepeth scored eight points and India Biggus seven.
– North Hills hoops
The North Hills Middle boys defeated Phoenix 45-5 on Tuesday. John Murphy had 15 points and five rebounds. Zack Sukkasem had six points and four steals.
– Rockwell hoops
Rockwell’s jayvee boys beat Cramerton 25-18 for the Carolina Christian Conference tournament. Andrew Brown scored 12 points for Rockwell. Brown and Alex Straight were named all-conference.
* Rockwell’s varsity boys lost to Calvary King 48-47 in the first round. Jordan Blankenship scored 12 points for the Chargers, while Jacob Swinson and Nathan Funderburke had 10. Ben Patterson and Josh Cummings made all-conference.
Rockwell plays Friday in the Foothill Regional, looking for a berth in the state tournament, which it won in 2005.
* Rockwell Christian won the league sportsmanship award.
– DCDS hoops
Davidson Country Day’s boys lost 46-39 to Our Lady of Grace.
DCDS played part of the second half with four players after two fouled out. Celexus Long had five 3-pointers and 22 points for the Diamondbacks. Tim Burges had eight points and eight rebounds.
* The DCDS girls lost 32-30 in OT to Lady of Grace.
– East Little League
East Rowan Little League sign-ups continue through Friday at Granite Quarry Town Hall.

– Prep indoor track
Mooresville’s boys and the Burlington Cummings girls are the defending champions for Saturday’s 1A-2A-3A indoor track state championships in Chapel Hill.
The meet starts at 9 a.m.
The 4A meet starts at 4 p.m. Southeast Raleigh’s girls have won three straight titles. New Bern and East Forsyth tied for the boys championship last year.
– Parks and Rec
Salisbury Parks and Recreation is accepting registration for its spring volleyball league at Hall Gym. Registration runs through March 7.
Registration fees are $35 per player for city residents and $70 per player for non-residents.
