Area Sports Briefs: Catawba home tonight

Catawba basketball teams play host to Newberry in a SAC doubleheader tonight.
The Indians ended a four-game losing streak when they defeated Carson-Newman by 109-100 with one of their best shooting performances of the season Monday night (See Scoreboard). Third-place Catawba (14-7, 6-4) scored 66 points in the second half.
Newberry (16-6, 6-5) won the meeting at Newberry.
Catawba’s women (12-9, 4-6) open the doubleheader against Newberry (14-8, 7-4) at 6 p.m.
Catawba travels to Mars Hill Saturday.
– College men’s hoops
Michael Gore (South Rowan) has moved into a starting role at Coker and had 12 points on 6-for-9 shooting and five rebounds in an 87-72 victory against St. Andrews on Monday.
Gore and the Cobras play at Pfeiffer Saturday.
– Doug Campbell (Salisbury) hit a 3-pointer and scored five points in Rio Grande’s 92-59 loss to Marshall on Tuesday night in a battle between the NAIA Red Storm and the Division I Thundering Herd.
Rio Grande fell to 17-11. Marshall improved to 13-0 in this series, which began in 1920
* Pfeiffer lost to Mount Olive 105-97 Monday. All-American Kendrick Easley scored 39 points for Mount Olive, while Craig Hayes had 30 points.
Davon Gilliard had 16 points and Jeff Pettiway, Chris Woods, Robert McGriff and James Crowder 14 each for Pfeiffer.
– College women’s hoops
Sophilia Hipps (North Rowan) scored 18 points for South Carolina State in a 62-59 loss against Morgan State on Monday.
* Pfeiffer lost 67-48 to Mount Olive on Monday. Domonique China scored 14 points for the Falcons.
– Prep girls basketball
In South Rowan’s 72-30 NPC loss against Statesville on Monday, Taylor May and Krista Haywood led the Raiders with nine points each.
South has clinched fourth place and a berth in the state playoffs. The Raiders finish the regular season in Northwest Cabarrus’ “Pit” tonight.
– Prep boys basketball
A.L. Brown improved to 13-6 overall and 11-4 in the SPC with a 51-45 win over Porter Ridge on Tuesday.
Demarcus Phifer led the Wonders with 14 points. T.J. Johnson added 13.
A.L. Brown plays at arch-rival Concord on Friday to close the regular season.
– Davie County coach Mike Absher said North Forsyth took a page out of the West Rowan playbook on Tuesday in a 81-64 win over the War Eagles.
In West Rowan fashion, the Vikings stopped leading scorer Drew Absher by double-teaming him in the backcourt and making him pass the ball.
“Not many shot attempts,” the elder Absher said as his son finished with a season-low three points.
Absher was held to 1-for-9 shooting.
The Mayfields led Davie (6-16, 1-8 CPC) as Jamal scored 13 and James 12. Landon Harris scored 11, and freshman center Shannon Dillard chipped in with 10.
The War Eagles finish the regular season Friday at North Davidson.
– Prep championships
NCHSAA championships scheduled for this weekend include 3A swimming and diving in Chapel Hill and 4A swimming and diving in Raleigh. The 4A and 1A-2A-3A indoor track championships will be held in Chapel Hill.
– Coaches vs. Cancer
North Rowan’s home basketball games with Lexington on Friday will be a special “Coaches for Cancer” night to raise funds for the American Cancer Society.
North boys coach Kelly Everhart urged fans to wear pink.
– Jayvee basketball
Doreen Richardson scored 31 points to lead the Salisbury girls to a 49-42 win over North Rowan.
Najwa Allison added 10 points for the Hornets (14-1, 9-1).
– Salisbury’s boys beat North 51-40. Dejoun Jones had 11 and Connor Miller 10 for the Hornets (14-3, 10-2).
– Hoops fundraiser
The West Rowan Middle faculty will play basketball against the schools’ eighth-grade goys and girls teams this Friday.
A volleyball game will follow as the faculty competes against student council members.
The annual event supports the “Hoops For Heart” fundraiser sponsored by the American Heart Association. Game time is 4 p.m.
Admission is $2 for students and $3 for adults. Concessions will be sold.
– 7th-grade hoops
Southeast’s boys defeated Corriher-Lipe 60-20. Colton Laws led the Patriots (2-1) with 10 points, while Seth Martin drained three 3-pointers and finished with nine.
Darius Gabriel had eight points, while Kyle Gillis and Cody Dale each scored six.
– Stallions basketball
The Cabarrus-Rowan Homeschool Stallion girls varsity lost to Covenant 46-41 on Tuesday.
Hannah Holm led the Stallions with 13. Nikki Milo added 10.
– College baseball
South Carolina transfer Keegan Linza (North Rowan) is now pitching for NW Florida State, a junior college program in Niceville.
Linza allowed one earned run and struck out three in four innings in his first outing.
– Lander’s Billy Veal (North) was named Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Week.
The freshman has pitched 9.1 innings in his two appearances, including one start, and allowed four hits and two walks. Opponents are batting .125 against Veal.
* Cy Young (East Rowan) and Jason Ridenhour (North) pitched Wilkes Community College to a 10-0, 11-6 doubleheader sweep of Cuyahoga on Sunday.
Young pitched five innings of one-hit ball and struck out three in the opener. He got support from Jacob Dobbins (North), who went 3-for-4, and Lance Emert (Davie), who homered and drove in four runs.
Ridenhour worked six innings, allowed three runs and struck out six in the nightcap. Daniel Welch (NW Cabarrus) had two hits for Wilkes.
* Pitt Community College and East’s Trey Holmes open the season Thursday.
* Matt Ingold (South Rowan) scored two runs for UNC Pembroke in a 13-9 loss to Pfeiffer on Tuesday. Julian Medina and Ethan Marsh combined for seven RBIs for Pfeiffer.
* Craig Beasley (West Rowan) pitched a scoreless ninth in Mount Olive’s 7-1 win against Wingate on Tuesday. Beasley struck out one.
– Rowan Hall of Fame
The process of naming new members to the Salisbury-Rowan Sports Hall of Fame is under way.
The first step was taken Tuesday when the Hall of Fame Committee met at the City Park Recreation Building.
The nomination committee will meet March 10 and announce candidates.
The final voting of the candidates will be held March 24.
The induction ceremony will be held May 16.
The Hall of Fame committee is made up of Wilson Cherry, Ralph Shatterly, Horace Billings, Arnold Chamberlain, Ed Dupree, Fred Evans, Sarge Linder, Aaron Neely, Bob Pharr, Howard Platt, Dr. Pat Whitley, Mark Wineka and Mike London.
* College softball Pfeiffer’s Stephanie Bethea was named Conference Carolinas Softball Player of the Week.
The senior outfielder batted .615 with eight RBIs.
* College gymnastics Navy’s Dylan Parrott (South Rowan) boosted the Midshipmen to a win over Army on Saturday.
Parrott, won the floor exercise and high bar and was second on the parallel bars.
– Rowan Little League
Rowan Little League is accepting sign-ups at Godley’s Garden Center and online.

– Baseball tryouts
The East Rowan Red Sox, a tournament ball 11-under team, will hold tryouts this Sunday from 1-3:30 p.m. at the Faith Elementary ballfield.
