Associated PressDAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ó Jimmie Johnson’s cut finger is “healing well,” and he plans to test several braces on his left hand when Daytona opens Friday.
Johnson accidentally sliced his finger with a kitchen knife as he attempted to alter his uniform during last month’s Rolex 24 sports car race. He had surgery to repair a tendon, and the stitches have been removed.
“We have two or three braces,” he said Thursday. “One’s kind of extended in the most comfortable position, and others kind of wrap my hand around so I can easily grip the wheel.”
Johnson said the area is still swollen, but his grip is rapidly improving. The season-opening Daytona 500 is Feb. 15.
“I’ve broken more bones through the years racing motorcycles, falling off golf carts, cutting myself, whatever it may be,” he said. “I am injury-prone.”
