Area Sports Briefs: Wingate women sizzle

Wingate’s women’s basketball team pulled away in the final minutes for a 95-80 win over Catawba at Goodman Gym on Wednesday.
Brittany Higgins led Catawba (12-8, 4-5) with 21 points and seven rebounds. Pamela Muldrow scored 12, Cameron Clark 11 and Sara Crane 10.
Wingate took charge late in the first half, led by three at halftime and maintained its edge in the second half.
Leading 81-74 with three minutes to play, the Bulldogs (13-8, 4-6) outscored the Indians 14-6 down the stretch for the SAC victory.
Catawba trailed at halftime 41-38.
Anna Atkinson and Kurie Washington scored 24 points each for Wingate, which shot 32-for-43 at the foul line.
Catawba plays at Tusculum Saturday.

– College baseball
Lander freshman pitcher Billy Veal (North Rowan) made his college debut with five scoreless innings and got credit for a 3-1 victory against Newberry on Tuesday.
Veal allowed three hits, struck out two and walked one.
* Zach Glass (Salisbury) had one RBI for Lenoir-Rhyne in a 7-5 loss to Belmont Abbey on Wednesday. Patrick Atwell (South Rowan) had a hit and scored for the Crusaders.
* Catawba’s opener scheduled for Wednesday was postponed. The Indians now plan to debut on Friday at 4 p.m. when they play Stillman at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium.
– College basketball
Doug Campbell (Salisbury) went 5-for-5 on 3s and scored 15 points for Rio Grande in an 89-83 victory against Malone on Tuesday. Campbell hit three of his 3s to key a Rio Grande comeback.n Coker’s Michael Gore (South Rowan) had 10 points and five rebounds in a 77-69 loss against Barton on Wednesday.
* Wesley Honeycutt (South) hit three 3s and had six rebounds for Davidson Community College in a 109-61 victory against Piedmont Baptist on Wednesday.
– College women’s hoops
Brittany Cornelius (East Rowan) carried Meredith to a 67-61 victory against N.C. Wesleyan on Wednesday with 31 points and 13 rebounds.
Cornelius was 11-for-11 from the foul line. Cornelius, who averages 12.8 points a game, had 18 in the second half.
– College football
Newton-Conover QB A.J. Bazzle and Anson running back Jamie Bennett were among 31 signees announced by Carson-Newman on Wednesday.
– College swimming
Missy Eller (West Rowan) was fourth in the 200 IM, sixth in the 200 free and seventh in the 500 free in Campbell’s recent meet against Georgia Southern.
– Prep swimming
The NCHSAA 1A/2A swimming and diving championships are Friday and Saturday in Raleigh.
Swimming competition starts Saturday at N.C. State at 9:15 a.m.
– Prep wrestling
Central Davidson topped Shelby 54-21, while Ledford defeated Owen 54-19 in first-round dual-team action held on Tuesday. The Central Davidson-Ledford match was postponed by weather conditions.
In 3A, Mooresville topped North Buncombe 40-30 and beat Lake Norman 40-32 to reach the quarterfinals.
Anson beat Charlotte Catholic 47-25. Northwest Cabarrus won its first-round match but was eliminated 39-26 by St. Stephens.
* The 1A/2A Mideast Regional will be held at Ledford on Feb. 17-18.
– Prep basketball
West Rowan’s games at Mooresville will be made up Saturday afternoon. The NPC quadrupleheader is set to start at 1 p.m. The varsity girls are expected to start around 3:30 p.m., with the varsity boys tipping off at about 5 p.m.
* Salisbury’s CCC home doubleheader with Lexington and North Rowan’s road doubleheader at Providence Grove were pushed back to tonight.
– China Grove baseball
China Grove youth baseball and softball league sign-ups are being taken at Dale’s Sporting Goods.
Registration fee is $45 for ages 5-6 Coach Pitch and ages 7-8 Coach Pitch. Cost is $50 for Junior Division, and Senior Division.
Registration prices are through Feb. 14. Late registration is $55.

– First Assembly
First Assembly’s girls middle school basketball team coached by former A.L. Brown coach Doug Wilson, beat Southlake 29-17 to improve to 12-1 and clinch the program’s first Metrolina Conference championship.
– Golf clinics
High school and middle school golf clinics are scheduled to be held at Carolina Golf Mart off the Julian Road Exit on Saturday.
From 1-2:30, there will be a “short game” clinic for high school players. Cost is $20, bucket of balls included.
From 2:30-4 p.m., there will be a clinic on swing fundamentals for middle school players. Cost is $20, bucket included.
More clinics are scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 14.
The clinics are open to all schools.

– Winter Blast
The Winter Blast Bench Press Championships will be held on Saturday, Feb. 21, at Hurley YMCA.
There will be six divisions with seven weight classes in each. Trophies for top three in each weight class.
The entry fee is $10 for the high school division and $25 for recreation divisions.

Rowan Little League softball is accepting sign-ups at Godley’s Garden Center and online at http://www.rowanlittleleague.com.
Softball cost is $40 for Coach Pitch for ages 6-8.
Cost is $60 for 10-under, 12-under and 14-under leagues. League age is as of December 31, 2008.
This is the former Salisbury Parks and Rec League.
