DAVIDSON ó Stephen Curry had 26 points, and Davidson extended its Southern Conference winning streak to 42 regular-season games Monday by beating Western Carolina 89-65.”We wanted to be competitive, be intense and active the whole 40 minutes, and I think we did that tonight,” said Curry, who hit 9 of 16 shots from the field and went 4-for-7 from 3-point range.
Curry, who leads the nation in scoring at 29.0 points a game, had eight rebounds and eight assists against Western (11-10, 6-5).
He scored 20 points in the first half, and Davidson (19-3, 12-0) pulled ahead by as many as 38.
“Our ball distribution was superb ó obviously, the catalyst for that was Stephen,” Wildcats coach Bob McKillop said.
“The joy for me tonight was that we had such consistency. That’s been elusive. We’ve had double-digit leads going into the locker room and haven’t done much in the second half to build on those leads. Tonight, we were very complete.”
Andrew Lovedale, Brendan McKillop and Bryant Barr had 14 points apiece. Max Paulhus Gosselin added 10.
Curry, McKillop and Barr each hit four 3-pointers.
“Whoever had the open shot was pretty much hitting it,” Western coach Larry Hunter said. “They were really, really sharp.”The SoCon record of 44 straight wins was set by West Virginia from 1956-1960. If Davidson keeps winning, it can tie the record at home against the College of Charleston on Saturday and break it five days later at Wofford.
Harouna Mutombo scored 15 points for the Catamounts.
