Area sports briefs: Wonders top Sun Valley

A.L. Brown’s boys ran out to a 21-point halftime lead and held off Sun Valley 76-66 on Friday.
Sun Valley (13-4, 7-2 SPC) entered the game in second place.
The Wonders put four players in double figures, led by Demarcus Phifer’s 23 points. Jaques Deese had 15, Xavier Watson had 12 and Jacob Newman had 10.
A.L. Brown (5-5, 3-3) led 44-23 at the half.
“We got off to a real good start,” coach Shelwyn Klutz said. “We shot the ball well and played our best team ball of the season.”
– Davie County’s Jamal Mayfield missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer, and Reynolds held on for a 74-71 win over the War Eagles on Friday.
Davie (4-12, 0-3 CPC) fell behind 10-2 and then went on a 21-2 run to take the lead. The game see-sawed back and forth from that point.
Drew Absher had 13 of his game-high 26 points during the run.
Late in the fourth quarter, James Mayfield hit one free throw to pull Davie within one, but free throws by Reynolds (10-7, 2-1) produced a three-point lead.
Jamal Mayfield scored 16 for Davie. Joey Taylor and Sherman Dillard each had 10 apiece.
– Ira Hines scored 14 points as Northwest Cabarrus’ boys defeated West Iredell 63-47.
The Trojans (12-3, 8-2 NPC) also got 11 points from Ty Honeycutt.
n Jayvee hoops
The Salisbury girls jayvee basketball team defeated North Rowan 52-39 on Friday.
The Hornets (10-0, 5-0) were coached by assistant Kai Brice in head coach J.T. Bost’s absence. Najwa Allison and Doreen Richardson had 14 points each.
Salisbury’s boys beat North 66-47. Dejoun Jones scored 17 for the Hornets (8-3, 4-2). Tion McCain and B.J. Woods each had 10. Riley Gallagher chipped in with nine.
– East Rowan’s jayvee girls defeated West Rowan 42-36.
Summer Taylor led all scorers with 13 points. She also grabbed eight rebounds and made five steals. Lindsey Dunlap netted 11 points.

Players can sign up for Cal Ripken League, China Grove Youth Baseball League and China Grove Softball League play at Dale’s Sporting Goods.
Registration is $45 for coach pitch (ages 5-6 and 7-8). The fee for Junior and Senior divisions is $50.
