Area briefs: Pfeiffer men drop thriller

Pfeiffer’s men’s basketball team lost to West Virginia State 128-124 on the road on Sunday.
The Falcons placed six men in double figures and forced 21 turnovers, but West Virginia State (5-3) shot 55 percent from the field.
James Crowder made six 3-pointers and scored 24 points for Pfeiffer (4-3). Chris Donald also scored 24 points. Robert McGriff scored 20 points. Chris Woods had 18 points, Trumaine Johnson scored 14 , and Davon Gilliard added 12.
Jeff Pettiway had six assists. Woods and Donald had eight boards each, but Pfeiffer was outrebounded 56-44.
All-American Ted Scott scored 37 points for West Virginia State. Wade Pidock had 25 points and 16 rebounds for the Yellow Jackets.
– Prep basketball
West Rowan is at home against South Rowan for an NPC matchup tonight, and Salisbury plays host to Davie County in non-conference action to wind up pre-Christmas basketball activity.
West’s boys (5-0) can clinch the top seed for the Sam Moir Christmas Classic and a first-round bye with a victory.
Salisbury’s boys (7-1) will be the top seed if they win and West loses.
Salisbury’s girls (8-0) have wrapped up the top seed. SHS senior Shi-Heria Shipp enters the game with 987 career points.

Saybah Sammy (Salisbury) had five rebounds as Fayetteville State beat California (Pa.) to win the recent Bahamas Sunshine Shootout.
* RaShonda Mayfield (West Rowan) had eight points and five rebounds to help Voorhees beat Savannah College of Art & Design 55-41.
* Shemieka Brown (North Rowan) averaged 5.2 points a game in nine outings for Wilkes Community College.
