Catawba tops Bowie
Catawba’s men’s basketball team stayed unbeaten with an 87-70 victory over Bowie State on Saturday in Wingate’s OrthoCarolina Classic.
The 23rd-ranked Indians are 5-0.
Rob Fields scored 20 points to lead the Indians.
Antonio Houston scored 19, Cliff Burns (Davie) had 13 points and six blocked shots, and Donald Rutherford scored 10 points. Dominick Reid had seven assists.
Armond Hill had 14 points and 11 rebounds for Bowie State (4-2). Curtis Massey had 12 points and 10 boards.
Bowie State led early, but a 3-point spree by Houston, who did most of his damage in the opening minutes, kept Catawba in it, and a 3-pointer by Fields with 12:47 left in the first half gave the Indians the lead for good.
Catawba led 51-42 at halftime.
Bowie trimmed a 19-point deficit to 11 with 3:32 remaining, but a jumper by Rutherford and four free throws by Fields pushed the lead back to a comfortable margin.
