Area sports briefs: Catawba in tournament

Catawba’s basketball teams will play in tournament this weekend.
The Catawba women will play in Goodman Gym in the annual Comfort Suites Classic.
Catawba (3-1) takes on Virginia Union at 8 p.m. Friday, following a 6 p.m. clash between Lenoir-Rhyne and J.C. Smith. Saturday’s games will send Lenoir-Rhyne against Virginia Union at 2 and Catawba against J. C. Smith at 4.
The Catawba men (4-0) will play in the Ortho Carolina Classic at Wingate.
The Indians will meet Bowie State at noon on Saturday and face Northern Kentucky at 2 on Sunday.
Coach Jim Baker’s Indians defeated St Augustine’s 86-83 in the Walt Baker Classic at Charlotte Monday. The Classic is played in honor of Baker’s late father, Walt, a long-time coach and athletic director at North Rowan.
– 8th-grade hoops
Southeast’s boys put three players in double figures in a 37-30 win over West Rowan.
Travis Abbitt, K.J. Pressley and Jack Gallagher each scored 10 points for the Patriots (2-0).
– Stallions in action
In middle school boys basketball, the Cabarrus-Rowan Stallions won 35-26 in overtime against St. Michael’s Catholic School. Jordan Long (20 points) and Brandon Adams (nine points) led the way.
Long had 17 points and Adams scored seven in a 61-36 loss to Charlotte Prep.
* In varsity girls basketball, the Stallions won 31-27 against the Forsyth Homeschoolers. Leading the way were Hannah Holm (14 points, 10 rebounds), Ruthanne Thomas (six points) and Rebecca Bare (13 rebounds).
* In jayvee boys basketball, the Stallions are 3-0. They won 48-45 against the Upstate (S.C.) Homeschoolers with leading efforts from Jason Long (13 points), James Dare (12 points), Andrew Kelly (10 points) and Sam Nelson (10 rebounds).
Long and Kelly had eight points apiece in a 33-31 win against Gray Stone.
In an 89-34 victory against Countryside Monastery, the leaders were Long (17 points), Nelson (14), John Clay (13), Randy Hansen (12) and Ben Hansen (14 rebounds).
– SoCon football
Appalachian State’s Anthony “Whopper” Williams, a defensive lineman, made the All-Southern Conference second team.
– Overseas basketball
Terris Sifford (West Rowan) scored 22 points in his most recent outing in Italy.
