Area briefs: Prep cross country championships today

The high school cross country championships will be held today at Tanglewood Park in Clemmons.
n The 2A girls race begins at 3 p.m. Cardinal Gibbons, which has won the last three 2A titles, had five runners break 21 minutes in the Mideast Regional. Salisbury, ranked sixth in 2A, enters the event as the Midwest Regional champion.Katherine Shields, Emily Shields, Brooke Johnson, Jenna Bryan, Katelyn Horning, Margaret Kaufman and Laurel Loeblein have led Salisbury this season. Johnson is a standout on the Hornets’ tennis team, which will be playing in the 2A state final at 9 a.m. in Burlington.n The 2A boys race begins at 2 p.m. Salisbury’s Nick Summers qualified as an individual.
n The 3A boys race begins at 10:30 a.m., and South Rowan’s Michael York qualified as an individual.
n The 3A girls race begins at 11:30 a.m., and West Rowan’s Leslie Pence qualified as an individual.
n ADM figures
Average Daily Membership figures were released for high schools.
Those attendance figures are used to subdivide teams that qualify for the football state playoffs into A or AA brackets.
Salisbury will be in the 2AA playoffs. West Rowan, the eighth-largest school in the 10-team NPC, will likely compete in the 3A playoffs.n Middle school softball
Steffi Sides had four hits and Sydney Poole pitched a two-hitter to lead Erwin to a 10-0 victory over West Rowan in the Rowan Middle School Conference softball tournament championship game.
Poole struck out six and walked two as the Eagles (14-0) finished a perfect season.
Bobbi Thomas, Josie McNeely and Allyson Mills had two hits each.
Thomas, the catcher, led Erwin’s defense with two outstanding plays.
n Middle school football
China Grove’s seventh-graders beat Corriher-Lipe 32-0 to finish with a 4-3 record.
William Elliott had TD runs of 77 and 11 yards, a 36-yard fumble return for a touchdown and a PAT run. David Comer had a 1-yard TD run and a conversion. Will Zentmeyer had two runs for PATs.
Standouts defensively for the Red Devils were Zentmeyer, Sheldon Kaminski and Eric Goldston, who made an interception.
China Grove’s eighth-graders topped Corriher-Lipe 22-20 to finish 6-1.
Josh Medlin had a TD run of 1 yard and two TD runs of 2 yards along with a PAT run.
Medlin scored the winning TD with 46 seconds left in the game to cap a 70-yard drive that consumed 6:14. Medlin also made several key defensive plays to help seal the win.
n West boosters
The West Rowan High booster club meets Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the media center.
Everyone is invited to attend. The club is kicking off its annual Christmas BBQ sale.
n Prep football
Alex Grubb and Jon Jarvis scored two touchdowns apiece as West Davidson defeated East Davidson 29-0 on Friday.
Grubb rushed for 117 yards and had TD runs of 44 and 17 yards, while Jarvis had four catches for 87 yards and scored on receptions of 3 and 60 yards.
West Davidson improved to 8-3 overall and 5-1 in the conference to remain one game behind first-place Salisbury. ED fell to 2-8, 2-4.
n Pfeiffer athletics
Pfeiffer’s Brittany Beltran was named Carolina Conference Golfer of the Month for October.
n Caudle wins event
Boyce Caudle won the Yadkin Senior Golf Association tournament championship held recently at the Oak Valley Course in Advance. He also won the award in 1995.
