Area briefs: Salisbury sends five to state championships

Salisbury’s Hannah Lebowitz, Kirstin Meyerhoeffer, Brooke Johnson, Shea Comadoll and Joy Loeblein will participate in the 2A state tennis championships that begin today in Cary.
Lebowitz-Meyerhoeffer (16-1) and Comadoll-Loeblein (17-2) are in the doubles draw. Johnson (20-6) plays West Henderson’s Amie Cloer in the opening round of singles.
Lebowitz-Meyerhoeffer, the Midwest Region’s top seed, takes on Brevard’s Kate Treacy-Lauren Fuller. Surry Central’s Kristie Combs-Tara Dockery is the other top-seeded pairing in that half of the bracket.
Comadoll-Loeblein, the Midwest runner-up, faces North Henderson’s Sydney Lyda-Julia Wallace. The winner could face Edenton Holmes’ Caroline Small-Isabelle Boehling, the East Region champ, in quarterfinals. Greene Central’s Elizabeth McLawhorn-Lauren Carraway, the Mideast Region champ, is also in the top half of the bracket.
– Volleyball playoffs
South Rowan lost to undefeated North Iredell 25-20, 25-13, 25-13 in the third round of the 3A state playoffs in Olin on Thursday.
South (18-6) rallied from a 7-1 deficit to lead 16-10 in the first game. Taylor May had two kills, two stuff blocks and served two aces during that run. North withstood that surge, though. It rallied to win the first game and took control of the match.
– Parnell update
Bobby Parnell (East Rowan) has a 2-0 record and 2.84 ERA in three starts for the Peoria Saguaros of the Arizona Fall League.
He struck out five and allowed one hit in four scoreless innings against the Surprise Rafters on Wednesday. Eddie Kunz, Gordon Beckham and Brett Wallace are also on Peoria’s roster.
– Jayvee football
Dejoun Jones and Deshaun Lyles scored two touchdowns each, and Riley Gallagher threw two TD passes for Salisbury in a 42-13 victory against Ledford on Thursday.
Jones ran 24 yards for a score and caught a 24-yard TD pass from Gallagher.
Lyles broke scoring runs of 21 and 42 yards for the Hornets (6-2, 5-0 CCC).
Dominique Dismuke had a 38-yard scoring scamper, and Gallagher connected with Daquan Robertson for 27 yards for the Hornets’ final score.
B.J. Woods intercepted two passes for the Hornets. Edward Cathcart and Jermaine Jackson picked off one each.
* Interception returns for touchdowns by Andrew Leslie and Tevin Jones sparked A.L. Brown to a 33-14 victory against Hickory Ridge on Thursday.
Demetrius Jackson, Xavier Stanback and Damien Washington also scored for the Wonders (8-0), who rushed for 167 yards and passed for 89.
– Washington gets ace
Badin’s Roy L. Washington made a hole-in-one on the 178-yard No. 16 hole at Corbin Hills on Thursday. Washington used a 4-iron.
Frank Washington, Gary McCorkle and John Medley witnessed the feat.
– Middle school softball
West Rowan defeated Corriher-Lipe 21-5 on Thursday and tied Southeast for second place.
West pitcher, Maria Taylor, gave up three hits and whiffed five. Michaela White, Kristine South, Christine Turner, and Taylor had three hits apiece for the Bulldogs (9-3).
Key defensive players were White, Turner, Taylor and Catherine Whitley. The conference tournament starts Saturday at China Grove.
– Middle school football
China Grove’s seventh-graders beat Southeast 36-8.
William Elliot had touchdown runs of 1 yard and 2 yards and ran for a PAT for the Red Devils (3-3). David Comer ran 1 yard for a TD and also added a PAT run.
Will Zentmeyer had touchdown runs of 2 yards, 6 yards, and added a PAT.
Standouts defensively for the Red Devils were Elliott, Zentmeyer, Matt Jones, and Eric Goldston, who picked off a pass.
* China Grove’s eighth-graders beat Southeast 32-14.
Connor Bridges scored on touchdown runs of 3 and 13 yards for the Red Devils (5-1) and added a PAT run.
Bubba McLaughlin had a 2-yard touchdown run and a PAT run. Eric Tyler scored on a TD run of 1 yard while Josh Medlin had 2 conversion runs.
Standouts for the Red Devil defense were McLaughlin, Devin Mason, Tyler Arnott, Eric Tyler and Clint Meece. Bridges had an interception, and Josh Medlin had two sacks and two pass deflections.
* West Rowan’s eighth-graders beat North Rowan 34-8. Brandon Ijames rushed for 156 yards for the Bulldogs (5-1). He had TD runs of 56 and 76 yards.
Darren Patten rushed 6 yards for a score. Terrance Polk had a 2-yard plunge. Cody McNeely had a 16-yard scoring run. Ijames and Patten added PATs.
Defensive leaders for West were Kenyad Kelly, Logan Stoodley, Rashard Sherrill, Jaylon Johnson, Travis Reddick, Adam Ratledge, Brandon Hansen, Matthew Choi, and Jacob Watson. Ijames recovered a fumble.
