Five of Salisbury’s top six tennis players have qualified for the 2A state tournament.
The doubles teams of Hannah Lebowitz-Kirstin Meyerhoeffer and Shea Comadoll-Joy Loeblein, as well as singles entry Brooke Johnson, clinched state berths by winning at least two matches Saturday at the 2A Midwest Regional in Salisbury. Lebowitz-Meyerhoeffer and Comadoll-Loeblein, opponents in the conference final, went 3-0 and will face each other Monday for the regional title. Johnson will play Ledford’s Tiffany Vanhpraseuth in a third-place match Monday.
Lebowitz-Meyerhoeffer had wins against Patton’s Elizabeth Plyler-Becca Hollar (6-0, 6-0), North Lincoln’s Jennifer Schneider-Shaunasie Perkins (6-1, 6-0) and Forest Hills’ Hannah Potter-Brooke Corley (6-0, 6-2).
Comadoll-Loeblein collected victories against Patton’s Elizabeth Hatcher-Bea Breeden (6-1, 6-3), Forest Hills’ Alanna Williams-Melissa Richards (6-0, 6-1) and East Lincoln’s Anne Rinaldo-Claire Rinaldo (6-1, 6-3).
Johnson prevailed in singles against Maiden’s Megan Moose (6-2, 6-1) and South Iredell’s Lauryn Justice (6-1, 6-2) before falling 6-1, 6-2 to West Lincoln’s Laura Baker, the unbeaten top seed.
Erika Nelson, the No. 6 player on Salisbury’s team, won 6-0, 6-0 against Maiden’s Kaylyn Kee before falling 6-4, 6-0 to Vanhpraseuth, the CCC champion. Nelson was two points away from evening the first set at 5-all, and Vanhpraseuth overcame a 0-30 deficit to close out the set with a service hold.
n Prep volleyball
South Rowan swept Kernersville Glenn in the first round of the 3A playoffs on Saturday.
South (17-5) plays at SPC No. 1 seed Hickory Ridge (18-4) at Harrisburg on Tuesday.
Hickory Ridge swept Ragsdale in the first round.
Lake Norman beat Concord 3-2, and North Iredell beat Sun Valley 3-0. Statesville, the NPC No. 6 seed knocked off North Gaston, a No. 1 seed, 3-1.
West Iredell lost 3-0 to Fred T. Foard. The Mooresville-Enka score wasn’t available.
n North Rowan ended its season with a 3-0 loss at Starmount.
East Davidson topped North Lincoln 3-1, Ledford beat East Lincoln 3-0, and West Davidson beat Lincolnton 3-1.
Providence Grove lost to Draughn 3-1.
n Catawba athletics
Catawba’s volleyball team beat Carson-Newman 25-12, 25-21, 22-25, 18-25, 15-12 on Friday.
Catawba, rated third in the Southeast Region, was led by Melissa Powers’ 23 kills. Melissa Griffith had 16 kills, and Mai Zoua Lo produced 14. Megan Courson had 58 assists.
n Lincoln Memorial upset Catawba 25-23, 17-25, 25-22, 25-22 on Saturday. Catawba (13-7, 7-3) got 17 kills from Powers and 15 from Griffith.
n Dana Dolbow’s late goal lifted Catawba’s field hockey team to a 2-1 victory against Transylvania on Saturday. Susan Hearn also scored for the Indians (3-10).
n Danielle Tanner scored twice to lift Tusculum to a 2-1 overtime win over visiting Catawba in SAC women’s soccer on Saturday at Pioneer Field.
Lena Suarez scored the only goal for Catawba (10-4-1, 4-1-1). Lindsay Webster stopped six shots.
n Pfeiffer athletics
Pfeiffer swept Barton in Conference Carolinas volleyball on Saturday.
Pfeiffer (18-4, 11-1) was led by Petra Ljubicic’s 12 kills.
n McCanless golf
The 9th Annual Carlton Jackson Sr. Memorial Golf Tournament will be held at McCanless Oct. 25-26, starting at 8:30 both days.
The format is two-person, best-ball, stroke play for 36 holes. It will be flighted after the first round. The cost is $52 and covers all golf and prizes.

n College football
Anthony Williams (NW Cabarrus) had a key sack to help seal Appalachian State’s 37-36 victory against Georgia Southern on Saturday.
n Justin Avery (West Rowan) made five tackles for UNC Pembroke in a 43-8 romp against Edward Waters on Saturday.
n Coastal Carolina’s D.J. Rice (Davie County) made three tackles, including one for a 6-yard loss, in a 35-10 victory against N.C. Central on Saturday. Ben Erdman (West) punted five times for a 33.0 average for Coastal and had two downed inside the NCCU 20.
n Volleyball club
The Rowan Volleyball Club will have open gym for ages 10-14 on Sunday, Oct. 26, from 2:30-4:30 p.m. and for ages 15-18 from 4-6 p.m. at Carson. The cost is $5.
