The Celtics (4-1) played without Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen, all kept out of action by Doc Rivers as a coach’s decision and not because of injury. Former Nets guard Sam Cassell also sat out.

CLEVELAND ó Tim Duncan had 16 points and 13 rebounds in 26 minutes and the San Antonio Spurs beat Cleveland 91-70 , dropping the Cavaliers to 0-4 in exhibition play.

Ballesteros, winner of three British Opens and two Masters, briefly lost consciousness and was admitted Oct. 6 to the hospital, where the tumor was discovered.
– LAS VEGAS ó Zach Johnson had another “boring” day on the course. Not that that’s a bad thing for a player who relates boring to efficient.
Coming off an unexpected victory last week in the Texas Open, the 2007 Masters champion shot a 10-under 62 on Thursday for a share of the first-round lead with Marc Turnesa in the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.
NASCAR
MARTINSVILLE, Va. ó Halfway through the 10-race Chase, Jimmie Johnson goes into Sunday’s race at Martinsville leading runner-up Jeff Burton by 69 points and third-place Greg Biffle by 86. But his own recent history shows Johnson better not ease up on the gas pedal if he wants that third straight title.
At the halfway point in 2006, Johnson was in seventh place and 146 points behind leader Burton with five races to go. Johnson went on to win his first title by 56 points, a swing of 202 points.
After five races last season, Johnson was in second place, 68 points behind teammate Jeff Gordon. Johnson won the championship by 77 points, a 145-point swing.
– LOS ANGELES ó Hoping to rev up awareness for the transition to digital TV, the Federal Communications Commission is putting up $350,000 to sponsor NASCAR team No. 38.
Starting Sunday, racing fans will be able to see Yates Racing’s Ford Fusion whip around the track with the words “Are you ready for digital?” on its hood.
