Stealing yard signs is unpatriotic
Enough is enough. There is a rash of political yard sign theft occurring throughout the area.
People who support Senator Obama for president are having signs stolen from their yards.
Likewise, people who support Senator McCain for President are having signs stolen from their yards.
According to the police department, this type of theft is considered Misdemeanor Larceny. Just in my own family, we’ve endured theft of an Obama bumper sticker and two Obama yard signs. These items were not given to us. We paid for them ourselves.
Whoever is doing this to supporters of either candidate, please discontinue this highly unpatriotic behavior.

Support Ford, Sides
Election day will soon be here. For the Rowan County commission, we should help those who have helped us. During the recent attempt to forcibly annex N.C. 150 residents, Carl Ford and Jim Sides both actively supported us.
Carl Ford was at our first demonstration in Salisbury and went to Raleigh to support us. Even his campaign ads and Web site show his stand against forced annexation. He has prepared to serve our county by serving on the Social Services board and the planning board.
Jim Sides supported us by demonstrating with us in Salisbury several times. He traveled to Asheville and Raleigh to speak out against forced annexation. He has served our county effectively nearly eight years as a commissioner.
Both Ford and Sides are conservative and will keep our tax rate low while providing for essential county services. I will vote for both of them.

Dismayed at Dole
Include me among those surprised and disappointed by Elizabeth Dole’s dismal performance during her six years in the U.S. Senate. Senator Dole’s choice of living in Kansas when not in Washington further adds to my dismay. North Carolina deserves better. Kay Hagan has demonstrated superb leadership skills in the N.C. Senate and earned praise for her astute knowledge of economic affairs.
Hagan’s campaign offers North Carolinians a splendid choice for the Senate and an opportunity to retire an ineffective Elizabeth Dole. In addition to providing North Carolina with an effective new member of Congress, Kay Hagan’s election to the Senate, where she will join Republican Richard Burr, will provide great opportunity for attracting bipartisan support on North Carolina’s behalf.
Our nation, state, and county will all benefit from such a positive development. One of the most welcomed results that their bipartisan efforts could produce would be federal aid for a much-needed new bridge across the Yadkin River.

A real change
Since Mark Wineka is looking for something different (Oct. 15 column), may I suggest that he make a trip to the South Side of Chicago and listen to Jeremiah Wright make a speech ( I will not call it preaching ) and this will be a change. Looking forward to a write-up when he returns.

Debating at Knox
I attended the Student Council debate at Knox Middle School on Thursday, and I was very impressed. The atmosphere in the auditorium seemed to be very professional, and the way the eighth-grade candidates responded to the questions was just amazing.
All of the candidates must be commended for their responses and their speeches. What a good time to have an assembly like a debate during this, a presidential election year. The students were able to receive exposure in the democratic process.
I have to acknowledge that the administration and staff really seem to be trying to do big things at Knox. I know they have a tough job, but I believe it will all pay off in the long run, and as the saying goes, “Rome was not built in a day.”
I can tell that there are higher expectations at Knox, and the status quo mentality is no longer accepted.
