Bobby Parnell (East Rowan) made another relief appearance for the New York Mets on Saturday.
Parnell entered the game at Atlanta’s Turner Field with one out in the bottom of the eighth. He retired Jeff Francoeur on a flyout and struck out Brandon Jones.
The Mets couldn’t rally in the ninth, and the Braves won 4-2.n Middle school football
Southeast’s seventh-graders defeated China Grove 14-6.
Cody Dale and Darius Gabriel scored touchdowns for the Patriots (2-0). Chris Hassard added a two-point conversion.
Hassard, Myquan Stout, Cody Rodriguez, Andrew Mauldin, Tyler Gordon, Lucas Safrit and Patrick Ratliff led the blocking.
Austin McNeil intercepted a pass and had a breakup.
n West Rowan Middle’s seventh-graders beat Corriher-Lipe 38-0.
Devin Parks scored on runs of 52 and 11 yards for West. Keyows Weeks scored on a 5-yard run, and Daisean Reddick scored on a 47-yard run.
Tyler Kennedy tallied on a 62-yard punt return.
Weeks, Nick Collins, Derrick Fortson and Najee Tucker scored two-point conversions for the Bulldogs (1-0).
Michael Pinkston made an interception for West. Zeke Blackwood made nine tackles and blocked a punt. Weeks had eight tackles while Reddick had six.
n Middle school softball
Erwin’s Sydney Poole pitched a no-hitter and struck out 13 batters in a 10-0 victory over Southeast on Thursday.
Poole had three hits for the Eagles (3-0). Jessica Rummage and Katie Kepley contributed two hits apiece to a 12-hit attack.
Rummage and Steffi Sides led an errorless defense.
n Southeast beat North Rowan Middle 11-5.
Chasity Young had two hits for North. Lindsey Snider had a double.
Allison Blackwell had a double and a single for the Patriots.
n North Rowan Middle defeated Corriher-Lipe 18-3. Taylor Sells struck out 11 for the Mavericks (2-1). Sells and Anna Lingle had three hits apiece.
n North Rowan Middle won by forfeit against Knox.
n Salisbury Academy
Salisbury Academy’s tennis team beat Forsyth Country Day’s jayvees to open the season. Madeline Hoskins, Allie Billings, Anna Flynn, Sally Fowler, Alexandra Drye and Ann Rollins Johnson won singles matches.
n Salisbury Academy’s soccer team (1-1) got goals from Justin Ruffin, Brock Overcash and Lake Billings to beat Statesville Christian 3-2.
n Softball tournament
The Salisbury Fire Department is registering teams for a fall softball tournament to raise funds and awareness for the department’s Firefighter Memorial Scholarship Fund.
The one-pitch, double elimination tourney will be held October 3-5 at the Salisbury Sports Complex, S. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
In addition to the tournament, a Home Run Derby will offer players ten swings for $10 with unlimited entry.
