Area briefs: Honeycutt wins title

Kip Honeycutt shot even-par on Sunday to hold off the field and won the Senior Club Championship at Crescent over the weekend.
Honeycutt posted a two-day total of 145.
The gross winners in the three flights were Grey Medinger (147), Russ Priddy/Terry Julian (153) and Rod Smtih (169). The net winners in each flight were David Arrowood (143), Johnny Morris (142) and Hershel Ball (143).
– McCanless Couples
The McCanless Couples played their weekly nine-hole match with 13 golfers participating.
The format was Two-Man Captain’s Choice.
Gene Seaford and Robin Lesley shot 34 to win. Matt Murphy and Trudy Csanyi placed second with a 35. Matt and Liz Murphy were next at 36.
Lesley was the closest to the pin on No. 3.
– Catawba athletics
Catawba’s field hockey team lost at Christopher Newport 4-2 on Sunday.
Catawba (1-6) got two goals from Nikiah Knox. Sam Vidal had nine saves for Catawba.
Susan Hearn scored two goals and assisted on another as Catawba beat Virginia Wesleyan 3-2 for its first win on Saturday. Vidal made 10 saves.
* Catawba finished ninth at the Honda Columbia Fall Classic men’s golf tournament.
Host Newberry shot 574 to win. The Catawba Indians had a total of 643.
John O’ Planick led the Catawba contingent with a score of 154 and placed 28th.
– College football
True freshman Justin Avery (West Rowan) had a solo tackle and four assists for UNC Pembroke in a 23-16 loss against Wingate on Saturday.
Former Catawba Indian linebacker Bo Noah saw action for UNC Pembroke and made one tackle.
* D.J. Rice (Davie County) had a team-high nine tackles for Coastal Carolina in a 26-7 victory against Monmouth. Ryan Boehm (Davie) started at right guard for Coastal.
* Scotty Robinson (Salisbury) was in on one tackle for East Carolina in a 28-24 victory against Tulane on Saturday.
* Justin McCauley (A.L. Brown) made three tackles for Averett in its season-opening loss to Bridgewater.
* Hurley Hemphill (NW Cabarrus) made a key interception in the red zone for Virginia Union in Saturday’s 27-2 victory against Fort Valley State.
* Cam LeGrand (NW Cabarrus) started at right guard for Wingate in its win against UNC Pembroke.
– Cross country
Gray Stone Day’s girls cross country team placed first in the varsity Division II race at the Cannon Invitational with a score of 70.
Gray Stone’s Hunter Latimer was first in 21:19. Janna Featherstone (12th), Mary Bergstresser (13th), Raelynn Perry (17th) and Megan Yost (28th) were other top finishers for Gray Stone.
* Carson’s girls were seventh in the Division II race at the Cannon Invitational. Sierra Zemanick ran 24:21 to finish ninth. Other top Cougars were Jordan Murdock (20th), Alex Hunter (42nd), Sarah Hayden (54th) and Devan Purvis (55th).
* A.L. Brown’s Larry Scaggs ran 17:27 and won the Division I boys meet at the Cannon Invitational. Dylan Rupert (29th), Zach Fesperman (32nd), Nick Buckwell (33rd) and Brendan Stauter (37th) were the other top Wonders.
* Carson’s boys finished third in the 15-team Division II race at the Cannon Invitational.
Nick Golden ran 19:27 and finished seventh to lead Carson. Matt Heffelfinger was 14th. Other top runners for Carson were Tom Keoboupha (24th), Anson Phillips (35th) and Matt Peeler (37th). There were 104 runners in the race.
Carson is still competing without Ethan Horne, one of its top runners.
* Gray Stone’s boys were the only 1A school competing in the Division I race and placed third.
Top runners for Gray Stone were Dalton Wally (seventh), Michael Tedeschi (14th), Kaleb Medlin (17th), Patrick Martin (20th) and Patrick Sullivan (21st).
Eldon Zacek finished second and led Gray Stone to a third-place finish in the Sub Varsity Division race.
– zMax Dragway
Tony Schumacher became the NHRA all-time Top Fuel wins leader Sunday at the inaugural NHRA Carolinas Nationals at zMax Dragway by racing to his 53rd career victory and moving past NHRA legend and longtime record holder Joe Amato.
Jack Beckman, Justin Humphreys and Steve Johnson also were winners in their respective categories at the first of six races in the NHRA POWERade Series Countdown to 1, NHRA’s playoffs.
* Salisbury resident Bill Naves competed in his 3,000 horsepower Dodge Avenger Alcohol Funny Car and qualified for the national event with an elapsed time of 6.10 seconds at 231 mph.
This was on the last qualifying attempt after Naves’ 6.30 was bumped out of the show by Melinda Green’s 6.12.
Naves’ parachute did not deploy properly, and his vehicle was stopped by sand traps and a catch net. The vehicle rode up the net, flipped and landed on the roof, causing extensive damage and preventing Naves from making it to the starting line for the big show.
– Middle school football
China Grove’s eighth-graders beat Corriher-Lipe 16-14.
Conner Bridges caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Eric Tyler, and Bubba McLaughlin scored on a 20-yard run. McLaughlin and Josh Medlin caught PAT passes for the Devils. Standouts on defense for China Grove were Tyler, Devon Mason and Jacob Morrison.
– College soccer
Keeper Honour Trosper (West Rowan) is now on the team at Coastal Carolina after redshirting a season at South Carolina.
Trosper has four years of eligibility with the Chanticleers. She played in one of Coastal’s first five games, a 9-0 loss to Duke.
n Brynn Dailey (Salisbury) has played in two of Maryville’s four games.
– College cross country
Tommy Wilson (North Rowan) placed 19th in St. Andrews’ first meet of the season at UNC Pembroke.
– College golf
Will Collins (Salisbury) shot 70-74 ó 144 and was 24th in Virginia’s first event at the Maryland Intercollegiate.
