Area briefs: Johnson gets hole-in-one

Lamont Johnson made a hole-in-one on No. 2 at Corbin Hills on Monday.
Johnson used a 4-iron on the 160-yard hole. Willie Faulkner witnessed Johnson’s first career ace.
– Intimidators lose
The Kannapolis Intimidators lost 4-1 to Hagerstown at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium on Monday.
– Local golfers
Salisbury’s Bill Haynes shot 68 and tied for fifth in the first round of U.S. Amateur sectional qualifying held at Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis on Monday.
– Chad Blankenbeker shot 76 and tied for 27th in the Carolinas Pro-Junior Tournament held at Greensboro’s Grandover West Resort on Monday.
– McCanless Couples
The McCanless Couples League played a nine-hole match Sunday August 3 with 20 golfers participating.
Charlie Gillispie and Trudy Csanyi shot 32 for first place.
Matt and Liz Murphy shot 33 for second. Ron and Jini Blythe also shot 33 and placed third. Monica Green won closest to the pin.
– McCanless tourney
The 2nd Annual Adult/Child Golf Tournament was held at McCanless on Saturday.
Todd and Landon Shuping shot 38 for nine holes to take first place in the 9-under division. Pete and Gaven Kuld shot 39 for second. Mechelle and Gaven Kuld shot 41 for third.
Todd and Logan Shuping shot 71 to win the 10-13 division. Mark and Drake Burlingham shot 77 for second place. Troy and Evan Neas also shot 77 and placed third.
In the 14-17 division, Dwayne McIntyre and Jared Hough won with a 67. Jamie and Connor Lowman shot 72 for second, and Ron and Zach Blythe shot 74 for third.
In the adult division, Bruce Rogers and Julie Eller shot 76 for first place.
– ASU football tickets
A limited number of tickets for each of the six regular-season games on Appalachian State’s 2008 football schedule go on sale today at 9 a.m.
Fans can purchase tickets online at GoASU.com or by phone at (828) 262-2079.
Single-game tickets cost $27 for adults and $17 for youths (ages 3-12).
– Carson golf
Carson golf practice is held at 10:30 a.m. at McCanless. A physical is required.
– Byrd named
Christian Byrd has been named executive director and general manager of zMax Dragway at Concord, the state-of-the-art drag racing facility which will open Sept. 11-14 with the inaugural NHRA Nationals.
– GARS event
Sixty-eight GARS members played a Captain’s Choice tournament at Corbin Hills on Monday.
Dorsia Atkinson, Willie Beaver, Jay Boyce and Rudie Mounts shot minus-12 and won a scorecard playoff with Bob Kimball, Don Martin, Gerald Osborne and Bert Wurster.
Carrol Downey, Larry Morris, Gene Poplin and Jeff Williams shot minus-11 for third place.
Williams (No. 2) and Tony LaBarbera (No. 5) were closest to the pin while Don Bishop made the longest putt on No. 9.
