Staff report
A man suffered multiple injuries after being hit by a train Wednesday night.
According to emergency services radio traffic, a man in his mid-20s was struck by a Norfolk Southern train on the tracks at Military Avenue shortly after 11 p.m.
An emergency medical technician treating the man said he’d suffered “multi-system trauma,” or multiple injuries, and was breathing abnormally, but did not specify the nature of the injuries.
Emergency responders called a helicopter to transport the man to a hospital. The helicopter was to land at the W.G. “Bill” Hefner VA Medical Center.
Medical responders moved the man from the area of the railroad tracks around 11:50 p.m., loading him into an off-road vehicle for transport to a waiting ambulance.
The train that struck the man stopped and authorities contacted Norfolk Southern to stop other rail traffic from entering the area.
