The foursome of Dennis Long, Mike Arehart, Jimmie Gentry and Clay Gentry won the 10th annual John Campbell Memorial Golf Classic at the Country Club of Salisbury by shooting 53, 22-under par.
A field of 216 golfers played in six flights in the Captain’s Choice tournament organized and hosted by Rowan Regional Medical Center Foundation and presented by Cloninger Ford-Toyota-Scion.
Flight winners were awarded framed art pieces.
Winning a flight with a score of 55 were Scott Auker, David Disabato, Joe Beliveau and Sam Sarris.
Winning with a 58 were J.C. Ritchie, Bob Clement, Stephen Bullock and Guy Hoskins.
With a score of 61: Jake Alexander, Skip Wood, Shane Wolford and Franco Goodman.
With a score of 63: Ben Craighead, Ed Cody, Wayne Koontz and Kevin Jones.
With a score of 64: Larry Newsome, Tommy Whitesell, Mickey McGinn and Ron Tirpak.
More than 50 volunteers pitched in by driving hospitality carts and serving as hole monitors.
n Indians honored
Catawba senior center fielder David Thomas has been named a first-team Division II All-American by the National College Baseball Writers Association, the American Baseball Coaches Association and Daktronics.
Thomas batted .435 with 22 homers, 64 RBIs and 23 steals.
Catawba junior right fielder Jerry Sands was a second-team All-America pick by the ACBA and a third-team selection by the NCBWA and Daktronics.
Sands hit .390 with 24 homers, 85 RBIs and 15 steals.
n Hanover honored
North Davidson second baseman Tyler Hanover has been named Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year for North Carolina.
Hanover, who transferred to the Black Knights from East Forsyth, batted .493 with 12 home runs and 42 RBIs.
He has signed with LSU.
n Catawba soccer
Catawba’s women’s soccer program has signed 19 players.
Joining Catawba in the fall will be Lake Norman’s Alyssa Retundie, Jessica Schwertner (Mint Hill), Lena Suarez (Charlotte), Lindsay Webster (Hopkinton, Mass.), Erinn Wescoat (Egg Harbor, N.J.) and Alanna Hantho (McLean, Va.), Marissa DiMarco (Voorhees, N.J.), Jessica Leroux (Ontario, Canada), Kaitlyn McFarland (Indian Harbour Beach, Fla.) and Sarah Mosier (Bel Air, Md.).
DiMarco, a 5-foot-4 forward/midfielder, was a four-year starter and made All-State the last two years.
Leroux, a 5-6 defender/midfielder, started four years and served as captain.
McFarland, 5-4 midfielder/defender, started for two years and played on a state championship team.
Mosier, a 5-6 goalkeeper, was a four-year starter at John Carroll High, which was ranked No. 7 in the nation.
Retundie, a 5-4 forward, was team captain at Lake Norman and was All-NPC. Retundie plays for Charlotte Soccer Club.
Schwertner, a 5-6 midfielder, was a three-year starter at Covenant Day and earned All-State honors three times.
Suarez, a forward, started four years at Hopewell, served as captain her senior year and was a three-time team MVP. She broke school records for goals in a season and career.
Webster, a 5-9 goalkeeper, started three years and was captain and team MVP. She was a three time all-league pick.
Wescoat, a 5-1 forward, started four years and scored 27 career goals. She was captain of her soccer, swimming and softball teams.
Hantho has been captain for eight seasons and sees action at midfield and defender.
“We have brought in a high quality of student-athletes and are very excited about their potential,” coach John Cullen said. “This group brings depth and talent to cover all our areas of need. I expect they will improve our team immediately.”
Catawba was 14-4-3 last season and runner-up in the SAC.
n Pfeiffer signs Rase
Pfeiffer’s men’s basketball program has signed Weddington’s Corey Rase.
Rase, a four-year starter, made 80 3-pointers last season and scored 1,257 career points.
He averaged 18 points, five assists and four rebounds as a senior. He scored 14 points in two minutes against Sun Valley and enjoyed a 31-point outing against Providence.
“We are very fortunate to get Corey,” Pfeiffer coach Dave Davis said. “He’s a good fit for us and there is no better program for a shooter than at Pfeiffer. He competes, he can pass and he has a strong work ethic. We return basically our entire team, but Corey will have a chance to contribute right away.”
Rase is the second signee for the Falcons, joining Davie County point guard Eric Lowery.
Pfeiffer won 21 games last season despite numerous injuries.n Holes-in-one
Charlie Gillispie added another hole-in-one to his résumé last week at McCanless Golf Club.
Gillispie, 74, recorded his 15th ace on the par-3, 135-yard third hole from the white tees. Playing partners Debby Little and Gino Green witnessed the shot at the Tuesday Scramble on May 20. It was Gillispie’s second hole-in-one this year at McCanless but his first since recent knee replacement surgery.
n At the Warrior Golf Club on Wednesday, Gary Wortman had a hole-in-one on the Par 3 third hole in the rain.
Wortman used a 5-iron to ace the 186-yard hole from the black tees. He was playing with Richard Cobb and Terry Watts.
It was his Wortman’s second career ace.
