Appalachian State’s Phillip Bush (North Rowan) was named the Most Outstanding Freshman of the Southern Conference Outdoor Championship meet won by the Mountaineers on Sunday.
Bush performed well in the long jump (third, 23-63/4), 110-meter hurdles (fourth, 15.91), 100 meters (sixth, 10.74) and 200 meters (seventh, XX.XX). He also joined Mark Sturgis (North) on the 4×100 team that took second with a time of 41.19.
Appalachian, which won its first men’s outdoor title since 2005, also received a boost from Sturgis. He excelled in the triple jump (second, 49-61/2), 200 (fifth, XX.XX) and long jump (sixth, 22-8). Sturgis qualified for the NCAA regionals with his mark in the triple jump.
In the women’s meet, Adrianné Alexander (South Rowan) helped lead Appalachian to a second-place finish. She had scoring efforts in the hammer throw (fifth, 147-9) discus (fifth, 127-6) and javelin (eighth, 98-10).
n Western Carolina’s Angela Stark (South) was ninth in the high jump at 5-1/4.
n Western’s Daniel Joseph (NW Cabarrus) was third in the triple jump (48-113/4), fourth in the high jump (6-31/4) and eighth in the long jump (22-31/2).
n N.C. State regional qualifier Jason Jones (East Rowan) finished sixth in the shot put at the Penn Relays with a throw of 56-21/4.
n Winthrop’s Jason Williams (West Rowan) had a leap of 7 feet, 1/4 inch to place second in the Big South Outdoor Meet.
Williams earned a spot on the all-conference team.
n Charlotte pole vaulter Makenzie Mullinax (South) cleared 9-113/4 inches and won the Davidson Invitational.
n Lenoir-Rhyne’s Lamont Savage (West) earned a provisional qualifying mark for the Division II national championships with a long jump of 23 feet, 10 inches at the recent Bobcat Invitational/Tri-Conference Meet in Banner Elk.
Savage won the event and was also part of a 4×100 relay team that placed third with a school-record time of 42.22 seconds.
Savage finished 10th in the long jump at the national championship meet as a freshman.
n College baseball
Seth Waller (West Rowan) knocked in four runs as Belmont Abbey swept a doubleheader against Newberry on Saturday.
Patrick Atwell (South Rowan) went 4-for-4 and scored three times in the opener for the Crusaders.
n Catawba’s games with Erskine have been rescheduled for May 8 and 9. The May 8 game will be Senior Night and honorees will include Bubba Morris (North Rowan).
n Davidson’s Brett Shore (South) went 3-for-4 in a 5-4 loss to Appalachian State on Sunday. Jerod Faggart (NW Cabarrus) hit a home run to help the Mountaineers sweep the series.
n Minor leagues
Bobby Parnell (East Rowan) fell to 0-2 on Saturday.
He was the starter for Binghamton in a 12-1 loss to Portland. Parnell was knocked out in the fifth inning and was charged with seven runs.
n Zach Ward (A.L. Brown) allowed his first earned run this season in a 7-4 victory against New Britain. Ward walked four in 12/3 innings.
n Brett Bartles (Brown) went 2-for-4 for Dayton in a 7-5 victory against Kane County on Saturday.
n South Atlantic
The Kannapolis Intimidators completed a suspended game from Saturday on Sunday afternoon and beat Lake County 2-0 at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium.
Logan Johnson hit a two-run homer for the Intimidators, who received outstanding pitching from Anthony Carter (four perfect innings), Levi Maxwell (3-0) and Henry Mabee, who logged his fourth save.
The regularly scheduled game was rained out and will be made up at Lake County next week.
Kannapolis travels today and begins an eight-game road swing at Lakewood, N.J., and Lake County, Ohio, on Tuesday.
n McCanless golf
The McCanless Women’s Golf Asscociation held its annual handicap tournament with 10 participating.
Sharon Miller won first-place gross. Beth Calhoun was second.
Mary Seaford won low net, with Eileen Full second and Monica Green third.
Miller was closest to the pin on No. 3, while Calhoun was closest on No. 12.
n College basketball
Wingate’s Sean Barnette scored 17 points and was the East MVP in a 107-85 victory over the West in the Collegiate Basketball Invitational All-Star Game on Saturday.
