Art at RCCC
A reception to honor artists represented in Rowan-Cabarrus Community College’s IMPULSE student art exhibition will be held Sunday, 2-4 p.m. in North Campus Room 251.
Refreshments will be served and winners announced. The event is free and open to the public.

Museum play
CONCORD ó Cabarrus County Museum is looking for students interested in participating in a theater production entitled “Little Brother Big Man,” written and directed by Bernard Davis. The play will be performed live at the museum, with other possible venues in the future.
Opportunities for students include acting, artists, set design, stage hands, and ushers.
The Cabarrus County Museum is a multicultural museum in Concord that promotes the Fine Arts, African-American Culture, Latin Culture, and more. They are working together with Rowan-Cabarrus Community College to produce this original theater performance.
All interested RCCC students and faculty are invited to attend an informational session with Bernard Davis Monday, April 28 in the ITV: Distance Learning Room at South Campus from noon-12:50 p.m.

Drum Corps at theater
Today at 7:30 p.m. Drum Corps International’s “The Countdown” will march into more than 300 movie theatres nationwide.
Presented for the fourth consecutive year by National CineMedia’s Fathom and Drum Corps International (DCI), “The Countdown” will feature six full-length corps performances from among the best World Championship finalists of the past three years, including Carolina Crown of Fort Mill, S.C.
DCI fans in the theatres will act as judges and decide the “Countdown Champion” in this first-ever, interactive voting opportunity. Using score sheets downloaded from the DCI Web site (www.DCI.org), fans will keep track of and rate the corps performances during “The Countdown.” Following the in-theatre event, audience members will return to DCI.org to submit their scores n the corps receiving the highest marks will be named “2008 Countdown Champion.”

EastSquare Artworks
EastSquare ArtWorks (ESA) will be open daily to the public during the month of May.
EastSquare ArtWorks is a contemporary fine art collaborative and design hub headquartered in historic downtown Salisbury, 122 E.Innes St. No other organization in the Southeast combines a historically renovated living/learning/studio/gallery space with an emerging center for art and design.
“Bead Box Saturdays” with artist Whitney Peckman will be held May 10 and May 17, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Each Saturday, EastSquare Artworks will host an open workshop and sale of beads. No experience is necessary and basic instruction will be offered and tools will be available to use on site. These workshops are free.

Artist collective
The Looking Glass Artist Collective of Salisbury is accepting charter members through April 30.
The collective was formed as an organization where artists of all disciplines can share space and resources. The group will be moving into converted warehouse space in the North Lee Street Rail Walk district in July. Their headquarters will include classroom space, a retail area to sell members’ work, a gallery and black box theater.
The group has no paid staff. It is operated and governed by its dues-paying members. Charter members receive a discount on their first six months of dues and priority in scheduling of classes, activities and events.

St. Thomas Players
The St. Thomas Players have announced their schedule for summer 2008.
The first show, to be produced June 18-21 and 25-28, will be Gore Vidal’s “The Best Man,” a timely look at the personalities and intrigues involved in a heated dispute for the US presidential nomination. This show is being produced as part of Salisbury’s annual “Summer Reading Challenge,” sponsored by the Libretto Book Club. The Best Man will be directed by STP veteran Jim Esposito.
The second production will be Lee Blessing’s drama, “Body of Water,” directed by Sarah Drinkard. This is an entertaining, often humorous, but deeply thought-provoking play about memory and the nature of human experience. Productions will be Aug. 6-9 and 13-16.
All performances for both productions will be 7:30 p.m. in the Florence Busby Corriher Theater on the Catawba College Campus.
Auditions for both shows will be held at Center for Faith and the Arts (rear entrance of the fellowship hall at Haven Lutheran Church, 207 W. Harrison St.) at 7:30 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, May 5 and 6.
The Best Man calls for a large cast, with roles for male and female adults of all ages. Body of Water calls for a middle-aged couple and one younger woman.
The St. Thomas Players are actively seeking volunteers to aid in all aspects of these productions, including set construction, lights and sound, props, costumes, publicity, and backstage.

Violin class
The Salisbury School of Music is offering a string class for beginners starting Thursday, May 8 and continuing through June 13, under the direction of violin instructor Carrie Webster. The class is open to beginners ages 12 and under and will meet at 5:30 p.m.
Webster has been the violin instructor at Salisbury School of Music since the school was founded in 2004. Over the past two years she has had a waiting list for new students and sees this class as a way to reach more students. A graduate of N. C. School of the Arts, Carrie combines a strong classical background with her experience as a bluegrass performer and instructor.
The school will be adding another violin instructor in June.
Located in downtown Salisbury, the Salisbury School of Music offers individual and group instruction for most instruments and styles, and offers voice, composition, theory, and jazz improvisation studies as well.

Faith Idol
FAITH ó Faith Idol entries are now being accepted for the following categories: Youth up to 12 years old; Junior Division ages 13-18; and Adult ages 14 and up.
First place in the Youth category is $500. First place in the Junior and Adult categories is $1000.
The registration fee is $10. The Idol contest runs June 28-July 4.
