Brewers thump Cubs behind Suppan

CHICAGO ó Jeff Suppan held Chicago to two runs and six hits in 61/3 innings, Rickie Weeks homered on the gameís first pitch and Jason Kendall reached base five straight times to lead the Milwaukee Brewers over the Cubs 8-2 Wednesday.
Ryan Braun and ex-Cub Kendall ó batting ninth ó had three hits each in Milwaukeeís 14-hit attack.
Suppan (1-0) gave up Derrek Leeís home run leading off the fourth on a 41-degree day and left after allowing Geovany Sotoís home in the seventh.
Chicago starter Ted Lilly (0-1) gave up four runs and five hits in 4 2-3 innings as the Cubs dropped to 0-2.
Nationals 1, Phillies 0
PHILADELPHIA ó Tim Redding took a one-hitter into the eighth inning and Ryan Zimmerman hit a solo homer to help Washington stay unbeaten.
Redding (1-0) allowed just a single by Pedro Feliz in the second inning and walked three batters in seven innings. He outpitched Cole Hamels (0-1), who gave up one run and five hits in eight innings.
Reds 6, Arizona 5
CINCINNATI ó Edwin Encarnacion hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to give Cincinnati its first victory under manager Dusty Baker.
Arizona took a 5-3 lead into the ninth on the strength of an impressive debut by right-hander Dan Haren, who doubled, scored a run, hit a sacrifice fly and pitched six innings.
Mets 13, Marlins 0
MIAMI ó Ryan Church and David Wright each homered, Carlos Beltran had three doubles and New York pounded out 17 hits.
Church had three hits and drove in three runs, and every Mets starting position player had at least one hit and scored at least once.
Oliver Perez allowed five hits over six scoreless innings to pick up his a win in his season debut.
Cardinals 8, Rockies 3
ST. LOUIS ó Cardinals center fielder Rick Ankiel homered, singled twice and made a diving catch and St. Louis beat Colorado.
Braves 10, Pirates 2
ATLANTA ó Mark Teixeira hit a two-run homer and Yunel Escobar added a three-run shot in Atlantaís seven-run eighth inning.
Jair Jurrjens, acquired in the offseason deal that sent Edgar Renteria to Detroit, got the win. He gave up seven hits and two runs in 51/3 innings to help the Braves avoid an 0-3 start. Jurrjens struck out five with only one walk.
Astros 9, Padres 6
SAN DIEGO ó Lance Berkman hit a three-run homer off Trevor Hoffman with two outs in the ninth inning and the Houston Astros rallied for their first win of the season Berkman drove a 3-1 pitch over the center field fence for his first homer of the season.
