Spencer Woman’s Club
The numerous civic activities of the Spencer Woman’s Club during 2007 were recognized with three first place district honors, bestowed during the GFWC-NC District 3 Arts Festival, held Feb. 23 in Kings Mountain.
The General Federation of Women’s Clubs, an organization geared toward improving the community through volunteer service, has six departments: Arts, Education, Conservation, Home Life, Public Affairs and International Affairs. The Spencer club’s wins were in Public Affairs, Arts in the Community and Education-Lifelong Learning.
Terry Stoops, an education policy analyst with the John Locke Foundation in Raleigh, was guest speaker at the club’s Valentine-themed February meeting.
Discussion focused on high school drop-out statistics, patterns, and prevention.
NFMC festival
The National Federation of Music Clubs is an organization that promotes and encourages students in their musical endeavors through competitions, scholarships, music camps and Junior Music Festivals . North Carolina hosts 11 Junior Musical Festivals of which one is held locally here in Salisbury. The 17th-annual festival was held Feb. 23 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church.
Participating students prepared two selections to be judged. Areas critiqued included rhythm, dynamics, technique, style and memorization. This year’s students participated in piano solo, hymn playing and piano duets.
Angela Robbins and Erin Harper, teachers at the Catawba College department of music, adjudicated this year’s event.
The following students of Diane Freeman received a rating of superior: Addi Bost, Johnathan Campbell, Charity Church, Kayleigh Correll, Jordan Couch, Carlie Darnell, Haley Dearth, Kelsie Dumont, Paul Faggart, Lindsey Gobble, Samantha Gillam, Brittany Hopkins, Kylie Kluttz, Lexi Kluttz, Andrew Mason, Katrina Newton, Samantha Rife, Kelsey Stover, and Dalton TrexlerThe following students of Susan McLain received a rating of superior: Lake Billings, Rosalyn D’Mello, Jonathan Hess, Kaylin Hunter, Charlotte Kaufmann, Margaret Kaufmann, Joshua Schiemann, Gracie Yatawara and Lily Yatawara.
The following students of Deanna Smith received a rating of superior: Anna Childers, Jonathan Childers, Dalton Johnson, Madison Johnson, Andrew Kelley, Molly Kimmons, Cheyenne Smith and Matthew Smith.
The following students of Jan Sywenki received a rating of superior: Shea Comadoll, Paige Gregoire, Emily Hammer, Melani Lippard, Isabella Rusher, Brooke Smith, Tara Speaks, Tyler Sywenki and Aaron White.
