Randolph Writers start short story contest

The Randolph Writers, a group of local writers sponsored by the Randolph Arts Guild, is accepting submissions for their First Annual Short Story Contest.
Prose stories of 1,000 words or less are eligible. The contest is open to all legal residents of North Carolina. Members of Randolph Writers may not enter.
There are two categories for entry: Adults, age 17 +, and Youth, ages 12-16. The first place winner in each category will be awarded $75, second place, $50. There will also be an honorable mention from each category. Members of the Randolph Writers will be the judges.
Mail your entry to: Randolph Arts Guild P.O. Box 1033 Asheboro, NC 27204-1033. Entry fee is $15.
Multiple entries are allowed, but a separate fee of $15 must accompany each. Checks should be made out to Randolph Arts Guild.
The author’s name must not appear on the manuscript. Entries must be original and unpublished. Submit two copies of each entry in the following format:
– Word count ó 1,000 words or less, double-spaced with 1-inch margins in 12 point Times New Roman.
– Title and word count must appear in the upper left on first page of manuscript.
– Enclose a 3- by 5-card with title, author’s name, address, phone number, e-mail address and age category.
Enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope with adequate postage if you wish entry returned by mail.
Deadline for submissions: Feb. 29.
Failure to comply with the rules may be cause for disqualification. Awards are at the discretion of the judges. Winners will notified by phone or e-mail .
Prizes will be awarded by Randolph Writers and the Asheboro Arts Guild. A reception will be hosted by the Friends of the Library at the Randolph County Public Library, 201 Worth St., Asheboro, on April 5 at 10 a.m. Participants will be asked to read their winning entries.
A Celebration of Young Writers
Creative Communication is sponsoring its spring 2008 essay and poetry contest, “Celebration of Young Writers.” More than $3,000 in prizes and awards will be given to poets, writers and schools in the area.
The essay contest divisions are: Grades 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12, with 10 top winners in each division. To enter an essay, write 250 words or less on any non-fiction topic. The deadline for the essay contest is Feb. 14.
The Poetry Contest divisions are: Grades K-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12, with 10 top winners in each division. To enter a poem, submit one original poem in English, 21 lines or less. The deadline for the poetry contest is April 8.

Selected entries of merit will be invited to be published in an anthology. This is not a contest where every entry is published. There is no entry fee or required purchase to be published.
Teachers who have five or more students accepted receive a free book. Schools with 15 or more students accepted also receive a free book and qualify to apply for a $250 language arts grant.
