CONCORD ó As the summer sizzles, so does the battle for the 2007 track championship in the Coca-Cola pure stock division at Concord Motorsport Park. Three drivers are locked in the tussle, separated by a mere 12 points.
Charles Hutto of Monroe has been the mark of consistency and that, with one victory, has him at 574 markers.
In contrast, Billy Symanski Jr. of Mint Hill has won five of the last seven features at the track. That has closed him to within six points of Hutto at 568.
Rookie driver Ben Smith of Harrisburg has yet to win, but also has used a series of strong finishes to be six points out of second at 562 points.
Winning drivers score 50 points, with a two-point separation back through the field per position. With 11 races complete and only seven remaining, it’s going to be interesting to see who emerges with the championship.
This Saturday night is another 30-lap feature for the full-bodied racers who always put on a great race. It will be UnionPower Cooperative Night with the late model stocks headlining with two 35-lap features. The limited late models and pure stocks will also be on the track.
Concord Motorsport Park is located on highway 601 north of Midland and south of Concord. More information is available by calling 704-782-4221 or at www.concord motorsportpark.com.
