Rowan County’s American Legion baseball team is off to a 15-1 start, matching the start of the 2002 team that won Rowan’s most recent Area III title and the state championship.
Rowan plays at defending Area III champion Kannapolis tonight. Rowan beat Kannapolis 11-1 in seven innings at Newman Park.
Kannapolis, tied for third place with Stanly and South Rowan, also won Area III titles in 2003 and 2004.
As well as Rowan is playing, it still is only 11/2 games ahead of Lexington.
South Rowan also is in good position to make history after beating Stanly County on Monday. South is 6-3 and has an opportunity to climb to 9-3. Its next three league contests are against the three bottom teams in the standings.
South is home against Statesville tonight and Wilkes on Thursday. South plays at Montgomery on Saturday.
The best season in South’s 12-year history was a 19-15 mark in 2003.

Alex Fairweather (Catawba) has made three good starts for the Outer Banks Daredevils of the Coastal Plain League.
Fairweather is 0-2 despite a 1.96 ERA. He’s fanned 13 in 181/3 innings.
n David Thomas (Catawba) scored three runs for the Thomasville Hi-Toms in a 10-2 win over Spartanburg on Sunday.n Lions golf tournament
Susan Morris, Wayne Bostian, Ron Eidson and Wayne Kennerly teamed up to shoot a 54 and win the Lions Club golf tournament.
Curlee, Landreth, Howard and Smith (first names weren’t submitted) shot 59 and won the second flight.
Brad Farrah, Alan Rouzer, Sandy Goodman and Jim Riddle won the third flight with a 64.
John Henderlite had the longest drive for men. Becky Isenhour had the longest drive for women.
Rocky Corbett was closest to the pin on No. 17.
Frank Starkey won the 50-50 on No. 10.n Minor Leagues
Thomas Wilson (Catawba) is 1-0 with a 5.75 ERA for the Evansville Otters of the Frontier League.
