Cabarrus Emergency Medical Services recently received a disaster medical unit that will allow a more efficient response to mass casualties. It is equipped to treat nearly 200 patients.
It will serve roles in local, regional and state disasters. Additionally, the unit serves a role of command and logistical support.
The unit’s placement was a result of the Urban Area Security Initiative. Key personnel from Cabarrus EMS, Cabarrus Emergency Management, Charlotte Fire and the Department of Homeland Security were involved in this process.
The trailer is the first of its kind to be deployed in the region, with several more planned for deployment in the near future. Most recently, the unit was used for support at the Nextel Challenge and Coca-Cola 600.
The trailer and supplies were purchased through a grant, with Charlotte fire personnel actually customizing the storage and cabinetry in the unit for disaster response.
