SPENCER — North Rowan didn’t do anything spectacular against West Davidson on Tuesday, but head coach Mike White hadn’t been looking for spectacular.
White had been looking for consistency, and he found it in the Cavaliers’ 66-35 victory.
Deanna Sommerville contributed 19 points and 10 rebounds, Shemieka Brown and Sierra Ingram scored 12 points apiece, and Shavonna Casey scored nine to lead North, while the Cavs didn’t allow more than 11 points in any quarter.
“This is really our first time playing a consistent game as far as scoring, defensive-wise,” White said. “We didn’t give up a bunch of points at one time. We were real consistent, and that’s what I’m really pleased about. We’ve been going in the right direction since the East Davidson game. It’s been getting better each day.
“I’d rather peak now than to peak early in the season.”
The Cavs are peaking in part because of Sommerville.
A senior, Sommerville returned to Rowan County a few weeks ago after spending 17 months in Nevada. She came back for the East Davidson game, which North (14-6, 7-4 CCC) lost 50-44.
While the Cavaliers may have lost that game, they found some energy in the process.
“They were good before that,” West Davidson coach David Klinkoski said. “But any time you can add another player and add another dimension, I mean, they’re a very good basketball team.”
They’re a team that gradually wore down the Green Dragons (4-17, 1-10) last night.
Led by Sommerville, Brown and Ingram, North built a 18-11 lead going into the second quarter. The Cavs scored 18 points again in both the second and third quarters and led 54-25 going into the fourth.
Sommerville, Brown and Ingram highlighted a group of six Cavaliers who played their final home game of the regular season on Senior Night. Jasmine Rice, Jazmein Parker and Peggy Propst all scored two points apiece.
” We wanted to give the seniors something they can be proud about in their last home game,” White said. “I didn’t really want our leading scorer with 30 points. I wanted to get everybody involved because it’s gonna have to be balanced from here on out.”
NOTES: North currently is alone in third place in the CCC, behind East Davidson (10-1) and Salisbury (10-1). The Cavs play at Salisbury on Friday.
