Wrestling roundup: East to face Butler in first round

Davie County’s wrestling team beat East Rowan 54-15 in a match to decide second place in the CPC, but both teams have qualified for the state 4A playoffs.

East (25-7) earned a berth as a wild-card entry and is scheduled to visit Southwestern Conference champion Butler (19-3) in a first-round match today at East Gaston.

The winner of that match will face the winner of the match between East Gaston (16-7) and Alexander Central (24-14) later in the evening.

Davie (23-10) wrestles at home against MECA-6 champ Jay M. Robinson (22-12) tonight. The winner will face either Northwest Guilford (17-7) and East Mecklenburg (18-7) later in the evening.

A.L. Brown (28-10) qualified for the 3A playoffs by finishing second in the SPC. The Wonders will take on Mid-Piedmont champ Ragsdale (22-0) in a first-round match at Mooresville. The winner will meet up with either Mooresville (21-1) and St. Stephens (29-3).

Tonight’s survivors will wrestle again Thursday.

n CPC tournament

West Forsyth won the CPC tournament with 162.5 points. Davie was second with 157. Mount Tabor took third with 142. East Rowan was fourth with 138, and South Rowan was fifth with 131.

South wrestlers Jacob Freeman (103 pounds) and Jacob Hill (112) won titles for the Raiders. Nick Haigler (142) reached the final of his weight class, and Chris Kiser won the consolation final at 135.

Freeman pinned Reynolds’ Todd Brown, and Hill earned a 5-2 decision against West Forsyth’s Joey Smith.

The top finisher for East was Aaron Plyler, who took second at 119 pounds. Placing third for the Mustangs were Donovan Smoot (103), Keng Lor (130), Chase Burris (140), Seth Stephenson (145), Josh Patch (215) and Chris Demitraszek (heavyweight). Taking fourth were Josiah Hurst (135) and Alex Lawson (171).

n NPC tournament

Carson’s Phillip Tilley (125 pounds), plus the West Rowan trio of Austin Perrell (103), Nico McGorda (145) and Daniel Green (160), captured titles at the NPC tournament won by Mooresville.

West finished fifth as a team, and Carson was seventh.

Tilley earned a 17-0 decision against Mooresville’s Dalton Pierce.

Green won by an 8-7 decision against Statesville’s Elliot Lane, Perrell had a 10-5 decision against Northwest’s Robert Golde, and McGorda had a 13-4 decision against North Iredell’s Bryce Durfee.

West heavyweight Kenderic Dunlap reached the final, and Carson had two third-place finishers in Nick Golden (112) and Anson Phillips (119).

n Jayvee Invitational

Host Erwin placed eight wrestlers in the finals and took first place in the inaugural Rowan County Jayvee Invitational Tournament with 188 points. China Grove was runner-up. West Rowan Middle took third place.

Most Outstanding Wrestler awards went to Southeast’s Alex Yost (82 pounds) and North Rowan Middle’s Jamone Kelly (132).

Other first-place finishers included Erwin’s Spencer Chapman (90), Jonathan Lowe (97), Jabe Fisher (103), Eli Walton (109), Michael Pounds (114), Cameron Feriante (140) and Cody Plummer (191); Corriher-Lipe’s Cody Simpson (121) and Scott Magnuson (161); West Rowan Middle’s Chris Estrada (118); North Middle’s Garland Archie (heavyweight); and Southeast’s J.R. Gonzalez (149).
