MIAMI — Coach Lovie Smith bounded down the steps of the airplane sporting an orange tie and several players recorded the biggest event of their football careers on camcorders.

The Chicago Bears returned to the Super Bowl on Sunday for the first time in 21 years.

Their chartered plane had a big Bears logo on the side when it arrived at Miami International Airport.

From temperatures in the teens, it took the Bears just three hours to reach a breezy 60-degree warmup on a trip that whisked them from snow-covered fields to palm trees.

Smith said Friday his plan was to take keep the Bears on a normal schedule as much as possible. That will certainly be interrupted by media mob sessions the first four days this week, including one Tuesday at the stadium where they will face the Colts in a week.

“We’re taking Halas Hall down to Miami. I’m a routine guy, and that’s what we’re going to do. You have distractions in Chicago. Distractions are everywhere. The guys will be fine,” Smith said.

COWBOYS INTERVIEW

Norv Turner got the best out of Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin when he was the Dallas Cowboys’ offensive coordinator. He thinks he can do the same with Tony Romo, Terrell Owens and the rest of the club as their next head coach.

Turner interviewed for the job Sunday, becoming the seventh — and likely final — candidate being considered by owner Jerry Jones.

“I was excited to get a chance to visit and talk about things that are important to me,” said Turner, San Francisco’s offensive coordinator. “In this league, it’s all about timing and circumstance. … I’ve got a lot of confidence in the things I can do. I think there are a lot of people in this league that look at it in that manner.”

BUSH FINED

Reggie Bush was fined $5,000 by the NFL for taunting during his 88-yard touchdown reception in New Orleans’ NFC championship game loss at Chicago last week.

Although the rookie running was not penalized for pointing back at Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher or for somersaulting into the end zone, he subsequently received the league’s standard punishment for taunting.

Bush, the 2005 Heisman Trophy winner and second pick in last year’s draft, sped downfield, cut back near midfield and was several steps ahead of Urlacher when Bush turned and pointed at the Bears star. He then did his front flip into the end zone.

RETIRING SOON?

Brett Favre indicated he’d planned to make a definitive decision about his playing future within two weeks of the team’s final regular-season game.

It’s been a month, and still no word.

“I probably jumped the gun when I said that,” Favre said. “I’m just trying to get as far away from it as I can right now. … I don’t know if I’ll ever know for sure (whether it’s time to retire).”

JAGUARS

The Jaguars have gone through an extensive housecleaning of coaches in the offseason. There have been six assistants who’ve either been fired or gotten jobs elsewhere, yet another sign that Jack Del Rio is on shaky ground next season.

EAGLES

The Eagles are concerned that middle linebacker Jeremiah Trotter’s troublesome knees might prevent him from playing at a high level next year. There’s an outside chance he might have to retire.
