McClure doubtful for Wednesday's game

From staff and wire reports

The college notebook …

DURHAM — Forward David McClure is doubtful for 10th-ranked Duke’s game at Virginia with a knee injury, coach Mike Krzyzewski said Monday.

McClure hyperextended his left knee after a collision in the second half of Duke’s 75-61 win against Boston College on Sunday. An MRI after the game showed no structural damage to the knee.

It was the same knee that was hurt in 2005 and kept him sidelined for the 2005-06 season.

“We’ll see how he responds to treatment this week,” Krzyzewski said. “We’re pleased that the test results showed no structural damage and that at some point he will be back. He’s had a tremendous impact on this year’s team, and we need him.”

McClure’s layup as time expired gave the Blue Devils a 68-66 win last week against Clemson. He is shooting 56 percent and averages 5.3 points and 5.2 rebounds off the bench for Duke.

BracketBuster Games

BRISTOL, Conn. — No. 13 Butler will play Southern Illinois in one of ESPN’s BracketBuster games between prominent teams from mid-major conferences, and the matchups will include former West Rowan stars Donte Minter (Appalachian State) and Phillip Williams (Winthrop).

The feature games will be played either Friday, Feb. 16, or Saturday, Feb. 17.

The other contests include: Northern Iowa at No. 15 Nevada; Winthrop at Missouri State; Albany at Boise State; Cal State Fullerton at Wright State; Holy Cross at Hofstra; Old Dominion at Toledo; Appalachian State at Wichita State; Bradley at Virginia Commonwealth; Utah State at Oral Roberts; Austin Peay at Akron; Drexel at Creighton; Ohio at New Mexico State; and Kent State at George Mason.

ACC HONORS

GREENSBORO — Virginia Tech guard Zabian Dowdell was named the ACC player of the week for the second time in three weeks after averaging nearly 27 points and seven assists in a pair of road wins.

Ty Lawson of North Carolina was the league’s rookie of the week after averaging almost 17 points, seven assists and four steals in a pair of blowout wins for the Tar Heels.

ACC SUPPORT

North Carolina’s lopsided win at Arizona pleased the coach of UNC’s biggest rival.

Krzyzewski, upset that the ACC has been “messed over” when it comes to NCAA tournament berths the last few seasons, watched with pride as Roy Williams’ team throttled the Pac-10’s Wildcats.

“People might not think this, but I was cheering like crazy for Roy,” Krzyzewski said. “The win over Arizona was huge for our league, and we need to talk about that as a league.”

AP POLL

No. 23 Stanford and No. 24 Vanderbilt entered The Associated Press college basketball poll Monday, while Indiana and Southern Cal dropped out.

No. 3 North Carolina and No. 4 Ohio State each moved up one spot because of UCLA’s recent loss to Stanford. UNC got three first-place votes.

No. 16 Virginia Tech moved up eight spots after beating Miami and Georgia Tech.

TENNESSEE

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. —

Coach Bruce Pearl said he will make a game-time decision Wednesday on whether Chris Lofton (ankle) plays against Georgia.
