The college football notebook …

MINNEAPOLIS — Tim Brewster spent 13 years learning the tricks of the recruiting trade under guru Mack Brown.

Six years after leaving Brown for the NFL, Brewster will finally put that knowledge to work in his first head coaching job.

The little-known Denver Broncos tight ends coach was hired by Minnesota on Tuesday to breathe new life into the Golden Gopher football program. He will be introduced at a Wednesday news conference.

Brewster spent the last two seasons with the Broncos after three years as tight ends coach for the San Diego Chargers, where he is credited with developing Antonio Gates from a raw basketball player into one of the best tight ends in the league.

CALIFORNIA

BERKELEY, Calif. — California coach Jeff Tedford has agreed to a four-year contract extension that will keep the two-time Pac-10 coach of the year with the Golden Bears through 2013.

Tedford is 43-20 in five seasons, leading the Bears’ longest sustained period of excellence in a half-century. He led Cal to a 10-3 record, a Pac-10 co-championship and a victory over Texas A&M in the Holiday Bowl in the just-completed season.

BROYLES AWARD

LITTLE ROCK — Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster received the Broyles Award on Tuesday, given annually to the nation’s top assistant coach.

Foster, who won the award in his fourth year as a finalist, coached the nation’s top-ranked defense this season for Tech (10-3).

LSU

BATON ROUGE, La. — All-American defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey, a projected first-round pick in the NFL draft, will return for his senior season at LSU.
