Bryan McCullough (North Rowan) is on a scoring binge for Muresul Tirgu Mures, a professional basketball team in Romania’s A Division.

The former UNC Asheville standout is averaging 25.3 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.

McCullough is shooting 57.7 percent on two-point field goals and 36 percent on 3-point attempts and enjoyed recent outbursts of 31 and 33 points.

McCullough was the Rowan County Player of the Year in 2001.

* Carlos Dixon (South Rowan, Virginia Tech) scored 25 points on Sunday but couldn’t prevent his Jiangsu Dragons from falling to the Bayi Army Rockets 101-97. Former NBA 7-footer Wang Zhizhi poured in 43 for the Rockets.

* Damien Argrett (South, Pfeiffer) scored 16 points in his Czech Rebublic contest on Sunday.

* College swimming

UNC Wilmington’s Jeff Dockins (West Rowan) was fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.25), third in the 200 breaststroke (2:13.61) and swam on a third-place relay team as the Seahawks defeated Davidson and William & Mary in a meet on Saturday.

* Women’s college coaches

Cristy Earnhart McKinney (East Rowan, N.C. State) is in her second season as Clemson’s head coach. Clemson is 9-11 overall and 1-4 in the ACC after Sunday’s close loss to Boston College.

* Stephanie Cross (North, Maryland) is an assistant coach at Towson.

The Tigers have a 12-5 record.

* Hipps on target

Sophilia Hipps (North Rowan) led S.C. State’s basketball team with 17 points in Monday’s 64-53 loss to Coppin State.

* Catawba hoops reunion

Over 60 former Catawba men’s basketball players are returning to campus the weekend of February 9-10 for a reunion and will be introduced at halftime of the men’s game against Newberry.

Among those scheduled to appear are Catawba Hall of Famers James Brown, Bill Bailey, Garland Davis, Dwight Durante, Andre Godfrey, Dwayne Grant and Dave Snyder.

* Pfeiffer radio games

Pfeiffer’s CVAC women’s basketball games against Queens on Feb. 3 and Anderson on Feb. 17 will be broadcast on 1010 AM. Games start at 5:30 p.m.

* Concord vs. Oak Hill

Concord’s boys basketball team (14-3), a contender for 3A state honors, will take on national power Oak Hill (Va.) at Cabarrus Arena on Wednesday.

General admission is $10.

The boys jayvee teams will play at 5:30 p.m. The varsity game starts at 7.

* Eastern Challenge

Twenty-six county athletes competed at the Eastern High School Challenge track meet in Chapel Hill, and South Rowan standout Makenzie Mullinax’s second-place showing in the pole vault was one of many top-40 finishes.

South’s Maverick Miles placed fourth in the boys pole vault by clearing 13 feet, 6 inches, and South’s Olivia Jacobs finished 30th in the 1,600 meters (5:52).

North Rowan’s Phillip Bush was sixth in the 55-meter hurdles (7.60 seconds) and 12th in the 55 dash (6.64). Cameron Wood finished ninth in the triple jump (43-10) and 29th in the long jump (19-8). North’s John Bostick was ninth in the 55 hurdles (7.88), and teammate Justin Snider was 21st in the pole vault (11-0).

West Rowan’s Kia Cuthbertson placed 10th in the shot put (33-51?2) and Justin Avery was 27th in the 500 (1:10).

Salisbury’s Anthony Smith placed 18th in the 55 hurdles (8.09), and Robbie Pulliam was 40th in the 55 dash (6.84). Shawane Saulters finished 36th in the 55 hurdles (11.16).

* Wrestling tournament

The Rowan County Middle School Conference wrestling tournament will be held at Knox on Saturday.

The event starts at 8 a.m.

* Rowan Tarheels

The Rowan Tarheels 11-under USSSA-AAU baseball team is looking for players. Contact Scott Setzer at 704-637-0455 after 4 p.m.
