CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Lawrence Hill got the ball in the corner, knew where he was heading and was delighted to see the path to the basket clear just in time.

“I wanted to give a chance for the lane to open up because Fred was still there,” Hill said after waiting just long enough, then making a driving floater with nine-tenths of a second left to give Stanford a 76-75 victory over Virginia.

The shot produced the 14th and final lead change of the game that was close throughout, a desperation half-court heave by Virginia not coming close at the end.

The Cardinal (9-4) trailed 75-74 after Virginia’s J.R. Reynolds made one of two free throws with 9.4 seconds left. But they inbounded the ball, got it to Hill in the corner and he drove, making a short jumper that sat on the front of the rim and fell.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — When Mario Chalmers saw his coach’s fire, he couldn’t help but pump up his game, too.

CHARLOTTE — Ahmad Nivins scored 11 of his 18 points in the second half Sunday and Saint Joseph’s rallied to beat Charlotte 75-70.

WINSTON-SALEM — Darius Floyd scored 12 points to lead three players in double-digit scoring as Winston Salem State defeated Ferrum 77-56 to snap a 15-game losing streak.

Curtis Hines came off the bench to add 12 points for the Rams (2-18).

ETSU 66, Gardner-Webb 63

BOILING SPRINGS — Brad Nuckels scored 31 points and made 15-of-18 from the field as East Tennessee State rallied from a 12-point deficit to defeat Gardner-Webb 66-63.

BATON ROUGE, La. — LSU forward Glen Davis was taken to the hospital for evaluation after being in an automobile accident early Sunday morning just hours after the Tigers’ 66-49 victory over Connecticut.

Davis left the Pete Maravich Assembly Center late Saturday and was driving to get something to eat when his car was broadsided by another driver who apparently ran a stop sign.
