STATESBORO, Ga. — D.J. Thompson had 24 points to lead four Appalachian State players in double figures in a 77-55 victory over Georgia Southern on Monday.

The Mountaineers (18-6, 10-3 SoCon) entered the evening tied with UNC Greensboro for first place in the North Division, but Wofford beat UNCG 80-75 in overtime to drop the Spartans (12-11, 9-4) into second.

Appalachian ended the first half with an 8-2 run and held a 41-25 lead over the Eagles (10-13, 3-9) at halftime.

Demetrius Scott added 16 points for ASU, Jeremy Clayton had 13 points and 10 boards, and Nathan Cranford scored 10 points. Former West Rowan standout Donte Minter had four points, two rebounds and one technical foul in 13 minutes off the bench.

Wofford 80, UNCG 75 (OT)

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Drew Gibson scored six of his 13 points in overtime.

The Spartans scored the first five points of the extra period, but the Terriers (8-15, 3-9) scored 13 of the last 16.

Kyle Hines scored 30 points for UNC Greensboro.

Howard 80, N.C. A&T 75

WASHINGTON — Darek Mitchell scored a career-high 32 points, including a disputed 3-pointer in the final two minutes, to help Howard win a game marred by two ejections.

Howard sealed the win at the line after Aggies coach Jerry Eaves was issued a double technical foul and ejected with his team trailing 78-75 with 1.8 seconds remaining.

After N.C. A&T’s Glenn Nelson had his attempt at a game-tying 3-pointer blocked out of bounds, Eaves began shouting at the officials for allowing Mitchell’s 3-pointer with 1:29 to play.

Mitchell’s basket came after the Aggies (10-13, 6-5) used a 15-5 run to pull within one. However, he appeared to release the ball after the shot clock expired.

In the first half, Howard’s Darryl Hudson was booted for committing a hard foul.
