Authorities charged two Virginia women with taking purses from a local store and upon searching their vehicle discovered a number of beauty and cleaning products worth hundreds of dollars.
Salisbury Police charged Lorie Ann Carter, 51, of the 200 block of Holt Street, Martinsville, and Katina Dee Jones, 42, of the 900 block of Blankenship Road, Martinsville, each with one count of felony larceny.
A report said loss prevention officers inside Marshall’s saw the women on surveillance video take a purse and place three other smaller purses inside them and walk out of the store. The incident occurred Thursday around 5 p.m.
Authorities said the women used a metal device to silence the store’s alarm system and then they removed the tags from the anti-theft device.
When police asked for consent to search the vehicle authorities found the following — 54 lotions, 45 deodorants, 15 men’s razors, six soaps, 24 laundry detergent, 35 laundry scent boosters, five shirts, leather jackets, three pair of underwear, four purses, five hats, bras and gloves, three scissors and tools, three women’s shirts and seven air fresheners.
Police said the items were inside Food Lion bags and Kmart bags.
Officials believe the women stole the items, but it isn’t immediately clear where the items came from, said Capt. Shelia Lingle.
Both women have since been released from the Rowan County Detention Center.
