WAXHAW — East Rowan’s well-rounded boys turned in a second-place finish in the 3A Midwest Regional at Marvin Ridge on Saturday.
Top-four regional finishers qualified for next weekend’s 3A state meet in Greensboro. Host Marvin Ridge scored 111 points to top the Mustangs (64.5).
Carson’s MyQuon Stout had the most impressive individual performance from the four 3A Rowan schools. The Appalachian State football signee won the discus with a season-best 179 feet, 5 inches and also took the shot put (54-6 1/2) with a mark close to his best.
Tre Williams, Stout’s basketball and football teammate, also was very competitive in both events. Williams took third in the shot put and fourth in the discus.
Stout and Williams helped Carson place sixth in the team competition. The muscular duo provided 31 of Carson’s 44 points. The meet used a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 scoring format for eight places.
West’s Chris Patterson was regional champion in the triple jump. His effort of 44-2 nipped East’s Donte Means by 2 inches.
East’s Marshall Shank took the regional championship in the pole vault by clearing 14 feet.
East’s 4×200 relay team of Calvin Edwards, Josh Moses, Means and Josh Little claimed a regional championship with a clocking of 1:30.76.
East’s 4×800 team of Justin Allen, Jason Basso, Josh Rowell and Conor Honycutt placed third in a season-best 8:25.27.
Carson’s Andrew Hower took second in the high jump, while South’s Lavon Hill was third in the high jump.
East’s Tad Bowers was fourth in the 110 hurdles.
East’s Little added to his relay success by taking fourth in the 100 meters.
West’s Raykwon Torrence was a double state-qualifier with third in the 100 hurdles and fourth in the 300 hurdles.
South Rowan’s Lavon Hill placed third in the high jump.
Girls
Marvin Ridge also won the regional girls competition with 98 points. East plced fifth with 37.33 points, while West was sixth with 36. SPC champ Northwest Cabarrus was eighth with 34.
South scored 9 points. They all came in the pole vault where Dakotah Lambert placed fourth and Brittany Luckey was fifth.
Khaila Hall led West. She won the long jump (17-0-1/4) and added a second in the triple jump.
West’s Alison Manley placed second in the shot put.
East’s Tori Gaul was the regional champion in the 300 hurdles in a school-record 46.85 seconds. Gaul took third in the pole vault by clearing a school-record 10-0.
East’s Brittany Small took third in the high jump, while East’s Jocelyn Lowe was third in the discus with a career-best 94-6.
