The end of Tuesday night will bring the end of many local candidates’ political hopes this election.
Voters’ chances to cast primary ballots also will come to an end at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Seats up for grabs range from the U.S. Senate to Kannapolis Board of Education.
Nancy Evans, director of the county’s Board of Elections, said this year’s early voting turnout was better than that of 2010.
This year, 4,056 voters turned out for one-stop voting compared to 2,641 voters in 2010 and 5,944 voters in 2012.
In former primaries, Evans said 13,851 voters turned out in 2010 versus 29,440 in 2012.
Long lines usually are not a problem on primary day, Evans said, and at least 150 workers will be stationed at the polls Tuesday.
Voters will be deciding on a slew of candidates, including the eight local Republicans vying for three seats on the Rowan County Board of Commissioners.
The candidates have attended and voiced their views on how to move the county forward at a series of recent public forums.
In the race for the state’s District 77 House seat, there will be no waiting for general election results.
What voters decide Tuesday will determine if N.C. Rep. Harry Warren, R-Rowan, will advance to his third term or if longtime Rowan County Commissioner Chad Mitchell will oust Warren and step into the N.C. General Assembly.
As in past election nights, a large turnout of candidates and their families is expected at the J. Newton Cohen Sr. Room at the Rowan County Administration Building at 130 W. Innes St.
Many eyes will be on the giant screen in the commissioners’ room as the county’s precincts continue to log their totals in.
“On Election Day, the polls are open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and (voters) will have to vote in their specific polling place,” Evans said. “If they do not know where they need to vote, they can call our office at 704-216-8140.”
