January jobless rates creep up in Rowan, Cabarrus

Rowan County’s unemployment rate in January was 7.1 percent, up from 6.8 percent in December, according to figures released today by the N.C. Employment Security Commission. The rate was 10.3 percent in January 2013.
The January jobless rate in Cabarrus County was 6.3 percent, up from 5.9 percent the previous month. The Cabarrus rate was 9.3 percent in January 2013.
Across the state in January unemployment rates increased in 96 counties, decreased in two, and remained stable in two, the Employment Security Commission’s report said. Dare County had the state’s highest jobless rate at 14.5 percent, while Orange had the lowest at 4.6 percent.
The statewide unemployment rate for January was 7 percent.
In other counties bordering Rowan, the jobless rates were:
• Davidson, 7.2 percent in January, 6.9 in December, 10.7 percent in January 2013
• Davie, 6.5 percent in January, 6.1 percent in December, 9.3 percent in January 2013
• Iredell, 6.9 percent in January, 6.5 percent in December, 10.4 percent in January 2013
• Stanly, 6.4 percent in January, 6.2 percent in December, 10.1 percent in January 2013
